The Union County Relay for Life, held Sunday afternoon at the Creston High School track, was attended by 15 teams and 27 corporate sponsors. Coordinator Pat Schlapia estimated $5,100 in net proceeds for the American Cancer Society, were up from $4,100 last year.
The gap is narrowing. At its regular meeting Monday, Gibson Memorial Libraryâs board of trustees approved changes in construction plans which should lower the cost of the library renovation project by $58,167. Those changes, subtracted from a new cost estimate of $948,000, leaves a revised construction cost of $889,833.
Efforts to establish a Union County search and recovery âdive teamâ moved forward Monday during the county board of supervisors meeting. Sgt. Steve Maitlen of the Union County Sheriffâs Office, provided background on a proposal to form a non-profit organization which would allow the team members to take training on a voluntary basis. The board tabled a formal decision on the proposal until it is reviewed by Union County Attorney Tim Kenyon.

The Creston Center of Planned Parenthood of Iowa is now located at 509 West Adams Street. The center had previously been located in the Matura Action Corp. offices while its program was being developed. The organization said the number of persons served has increased to a point where additional space was needed.
The Creston City Council indicated Tuesday night it would prefer employing a âbusiness managerâ for the city rather than a city manager who would have active control over all city departments.
Trailing 2-0 after two innings, Crestonâs Pantherettes broke loose for six runs in the next three innings to post a 6-2 victory over the East Union Eagles here, Tuesday night, running the Creston record to 4-1 for the season.
Corning will dedicate its new football field, located northwest of Corning on old highway 34 this Friday night when the Red Raiders host Griswold.

Ten wrestling matches and three boxing bouts have been scheduled for the big wrestling and boxing show at Afton tonight, set for 8:30 p.m. at V.F.W field in Afton under the auspices of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8882 of Afton. Headlining the show will be Aftonâs own Earl Conrad, retired undefeated lightweight champion of the world.
Further plans for the food sale Oct. 6 at the Sid Strauss building, were made Monday when the Hospital Auxilary board met at the hospital.
There was a big crowd and a big job of providing the lunch for the 1,000 or so persons who attended the annual meeting of the Rideta Electric Cooperative of Mount Ayr last week. The meetings were held in a large tent at the Ringgold County Fairgrounds, the only place of size available there.
The grandmaster of Iowa Odd Fellows and the president of the Rebekah Assembly of Iowa will be the principal speakers at the Blue Grass I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Association meeting here Thursday. Creston I.O.O.F and Rebekah lodges will be hosts to the meeting. There will be a joint dinner at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Methodist Church.
Supervisor Ray Taylor of Creston said today he will not run as an independent candidate for re-election to the Union County Board of Supervisors in the November general election. Taylor had been mentioned frequently as a possible independent candidate, He was beaten by George Gault for the Republican nomination for supervisor in the Creston district in the June primary. Robert D. Taha is the Democratic candidate
