MEDINA, Ohio – With a goal to begin construction in April 2026, the city is preparing for the design of pedestrian safety and ADA improvements around the square.
City Engineer Patrick Patton explained that these improvements will be combined with the resurfacing of US 42 between Lafayette Street and 300 feet north of West Homestead Street.
Council recently passed an ordinance amending previously approved legislation that entered the city into an agreement with American Structurepoint for design services of the resurfacing project. The agreement now also includes design services for the safety upgrades in the square.
“We received a $500,000 safety grant from ODOT to fund these improvements,” Patton said. “I have to give ODOT credit. They reached out to us and encouraged us to apply for this grant in July and then we were awarded the grant in September. Now the design deadline is Dec. 3. That is warp speed for ODOT.”
Patton also reminded residents and business owners that the city is accepting feedback and comments about the design of the safety enhancements through Nov. 22.
“If you go to the city’s website and then to the Medina News tab, you can find a press release about the project and an exhibit showing the proposed improvements,” he said. “We have already received a lot of comments and we encourage the public to submit any thoughts they have.”
Proposed improvements include pedestrian bump outs, extending the curb at each pedestrian crossing into Court Street and Broadway Street between Washington Street and East Liberty Street, effectively making the pedestrian crossings shorter.
Construction is expected to begin April 2026 and reach completion by August 2026. Traffic will be maintained during construction including pedestrian access, business access and residential access.
