PlayStation Vita Introduces Themes In Tomorrow's Update
The PlayStation Vita has been up and running for a few years now but, starting tomorrow, Sony is beginning a bit of a redecorating effort, giving the portable gaming device a facelift just in time for the holidays with the introduction of official themes.
The PlayStation Vita has seen a revitalization of sorts this past year, spurred on by a constant stream of new indie titles to pad out the more rare big box games, as well as newfound functionality as a companion device to go along with the hugely successful PlayStation 4.
From the get-go, the Vita was open to some pretty snazzy customization features. From choosing what image appeared on the lock screen to altering the background of each of the system’s main screens, players have the ability to give their Vita plenty of personal flair. Tomorrow, though, official themes will finally become available on the device, something that’s been sorely missing since the console launched all those years ago.
It was announced a couple of weeks back that the Vita and the PlayStation 4 would soon be getting themes. That was especially good news for the home console that, nearly a year after its launch, still only boasted a boring blue background for gamers to stare at. Now if only they’d allow me to organize my games and apps on the console, I’d be set.
While no word on PS4 apps has followed, a recent PlayStation Blog post announced that the consoles customizable options would be enhanced with the launch of update 3.30 tomorrow afternoon.
According to the post, these themes will include special images for the lock screen and home screens, as well as unique images for some of the system’s main icons, like “Friends,” “Mail,” “Party” and more. The biggest surprise, though, is that the themes will change the system’s background music, giving those of you who still have that feature turned on something new to listen to other than the same gentle tones and whooshing sounds that have been available for the past few years.
The initial batch of themes will be generic in nature, including “Stitching” and “Crystal” sets, just to name a couple. Additional themes will be introduced later, including set-ups for games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, the heartwarming Tearaway and more. Fingers crossed for a Gravity Rush option.

A couple of other minor tweaks will also be included in tomorrow’s Vita update. First off, trophy rarity will now be displayed, letting you know how many of your fellow players have achieved these digital rewards. Second is a new scheduling feature that lets you share events with your friends, which should make it easier than ever to set up online gaming sessions with your best buds.
