One of the scariest games of 2014 is getting a sequel. Designer Scott Cawthon has confirmed that Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is currently in production.
In Five Nights at Freddy's, the player is a night watch security guard at restaurant Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. It's a sort of Chuck E. Cheese knock-off with animatronic animal characters. These robots are allowed to roam freely at night, but have a habit of killing anyone they encounter.
The player's goal is to survive through each shift. They use shoddy security cameras and lights to keep track of the robots' movements throughout the restaurant. These electronics, along with the doors to the guard station, use up a limited supply of electricity. If the player runs out of spare electricity, they'll be helpless to stop the murderous robots.The idea is to monitor the robots, find out when they're close to the security station and then shut the door to keep them at bay.
Five Nights debuted on PC in August and then made its way to Android and iOS shortly after. Like a lot of horror games, it's become very popular fodder for Let's Play videos. People really love other people getting scared:
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 puts players into the role of another security guard at Freddy Fazbear's. Since the last game, new robots have been added to the restaurant. Also, for whatever reason, the security station no longer has a door.
The player's last line of defense now is an empty Freddy Fazbear head. They can wear it in hopes that it will trick robots that wander into the security office.
I'm not sure exactly how they've balanced gameplay around this new trick - I mean, the head doesn't need electricity, does it? Still, I'm sure that the basic gameplay - watch the robots, use your "oh shit" button sparingly - is still intact here. I guess the big difference is now you'll actually see these robots walk right past you. I'm not looking forward to it.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be released sometime in 2015. The game is already the top-rated title on Steam Greenlight so a Steam release seems very likely.
