Blizzard revealed today that the closed beta test for Diablo III is now underway. They're currently sending out the first wave of invitations and will add additional testers as the beta proceeds.
The Diablo III beta gives players access to all five classes from the full game: Barbarian, Witch doctor, Wizard, Monk, and Demon Hunter. They'll get to try out part of Act I and face off against the Skeleton King, presumably one of the earlier boss fights in that Act. The beta will also let players experience the game's crafting and skill systems.
"This closed beta test is an important milestone for us as we enter the final stages of development on Diablo III," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Our goal is to create the best action role-playing game experience to date, building on everything we've learned since the release of Diablo II and incorporating the powerful features of the new Battle.net platform. We hope players enjoy participating in the beta test and we look forward to hearing their feedback."
The beta is English-only but open to both PC and Mac users. Anyone with a Battle.net account with Blizzard games attached to it is eligible for testing. To opt into the beta, log into your Battle.net account and go to the "Games and Codes" section of the Account Management page. Select the "Beta Profile" settings option and run the System Check application to submit your computer's specs to Blizzard. Then, sit around and wait.
If you're chosen for the DIII beta, it'll say so on your Battle.net account. Now that Blizzard announced that the beta's underway, a lot of bogus emails will be floating around. If you get any emails written in broken English telling you to redeem your beta key by inputting your credit card number on a site called wow-blizzard-not-a-scam.com...yeah, probably fake. Just be cautious.
It's not clear how long the Diablo III beta test will last. It'd be easier to guess that if we knew when the full game was coming out. Blizzard will in all likelihood provide a release date during BlizzCon next month.
