Alzheimer’s Disease Support

The incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is growing along with the increasing elder population of Cayuga County. Caregivers are in need of ongoing relief and support in order to maintain their responsibilities over a long period of time.

The Office for the Aging provides education and support for those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and for their families and caregivers. This is accomplished through:

  • Caregiver Respite Services
  • Collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association of Central New York for support and services
  • Help to safeguard those who wander
  • A free lending library of books, videos, and brochures for anyone who has an interest
  • Workshops for families, professionals, and informal caregivers

Project Lifesaver

Project Lifesaver LogoProject Lifesaver is a rapid-response rescue program for individuals who are at risk of wandering and becoming lost. Each participant is fitted with a personalized Project Lifesaver wristband. This unique wristband is a one-ounce battery-operated transmitter that emits an automatic tracking signal.

When needed, this signal can be tracked by specially trained personnel in the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department on the ground or in the air. Search time has typically been reduced from hours and days down to minutes.

Project Lifesaver can provide comfort to caregivers without compromising the safety or dignity of their loved one. For more information on this program, call the Office for the Aging at 315-253-1226.

MedicAlert and Safe Return

The Safe Return Program is a national information and photo database that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It works through Alzheimer's Association chapters across the country, Medic-Alert, law enforcement and other emergency responder agencies. The Safe Return Program will provide identification products such as:

  • Clothing labels with the toll-free 800 number on them
  • Jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets
  • Wallet cards

How It Works

When a family or caregiver notifies Safe Return that their family member has wandered, the missing person's photograph and information are faxed to local law enforcement agencies. Anyone who finds the lost person calls the toll free number shown on the identification product the person is wearing and the family is contacted.
