Deputy Sheriff (Custody)

The Cayuga County Jail is a maximum security 212-bed facility. It houses both male and female sentenced and unsentenced prisoners, as well as minors aged 16 to 18. It is mandated to be in compliance with the many complex and detailed minimum standards set forth by the New York State Commission of Correction.

Responsibilities

As a Sheriff Custody Officer, you are responsible for the enforcement of rules and regulations governing the custody, security, conduct, discipline, safety and general well-being of inmates at the Cayuga County Jail. Duties involve considerable inmate contact and supervision in a work, recreation or learning environment, as well as transporting inmates for court appearances and supervision for outside work details.

Qualifications

Must be a high school graduate, possess a GED, or US Armed Forces General Education Certificate 

Date of Exam 
Must be not less than 20 years of age 

Date of Appointment

Must be a resident of Cayuga County or Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego, Seneca, Tompkins, Wayne Counties

  • Must possess current valid NYS Driver’s License
  • Must meet the physical and medical standards as established by Cayuga County
  • Must successfully complete psychological exam
  • Must successfully complete an inclusive background investigation

After Appointment 

  • Successful completion of academy and mandated training
  • Must maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License

Salary Base (2024 SEACC)

  • Probationary: $56,109
  • After six months: $57,557

Deputy Sheriff (Police) 


Responsibilities:

The Members of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, Road Patrol Division, are responsible for the protection of lives and property and the enforcement of law and ordinances in Cayuga County. A Deputy Sheriff assists in the investigation of offenses, the apprehension of violators, and conducts routine patrol operations in accordance the standard departmental operating procedures.

Qualifications: 

Must be a high school graduate, possess a GED, or US Armed Forces General Education Certificate

Date of Exam

  • Must be at least 19 years old
  • Must be not more than 35 years old unless the candidate meets military or terminal leave

Date of Appointment

  • Must possess current valid NYS Driver’s License
  • Must be a resident of Cayuga County
  • Must meet all current requirements as set by Section 58 of the Civil Service Law
  • Must meet the physical and medical standards established by Cayuga County
  • Must successfully complete psychological exam
  • Must successfully pass a Sheriff’s Background Investigation

After Appointment 

  • Must maintain valid NYS Driver’s License
  • Successful completion of training prescribed by Municipal Police Training Council within one year of appointment


Salary Base (2024 DSPA)

  • Probationary: $62,279
  • After six months: $63,433
