Established in February 1969, the Cayuga County Historian’s Office holds and preserves a wide array of county-related documents dating from the 1750s to the present day. We house and maintain a collection including, but not limited to:
- Historical photographs
- Local history books
- Manuscripts
- Maps
The Cayuga County Historian’s Office provides academic, historical, and genealogical research to local and world-wide researchers through in-person visitation and mail requests.
Here is a list of County Surnames, in the County Historian’s Office, and in several Township Historian Collections. Beyond these specific family names, our collections include information beyond this list; it often proves fruitful to contact our office, or a specific Town Historian, to obtain amplified information.

"Uncovering the Freedom Trail"
There is now a link to a PDF "Uncovering the Freedom Trail: A Cultural Resources Survey of Sites Relating to the Underground Railroad, Abolitionism and African American Life in Auburn and Cayuga County, New York" on the "Finding Aids and Indexes" Page. We will periodically add more such reference materials to that page.
