100 Marathons and a BridgeClimb
On Monday 18th September, Chinese ultra-marathon champion Chen Pen Bin, participated in his first journey to the summit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a relaxing warm-down activity after competing in Sunday’s Blackmores Sydney Running Festival.
The 1,300 step journey was light work for the endurance athlete, famous for running 100 marathons in 100 consecutive days across nine provinces in China.
However Chen Pen Bin’s pulse was raised and his breath taken away by the uninterrupted view of one of the world’s greatest cities and there was certainly a sense of achievement and wonder when he reached the summit, 134 metres above the harbour.
He stood at the summit, did a full 360 degree rotation and exclaimed “This view is magnificent. Everybody who comes to Sydney should do a BridgeClimb. There is nothing like this anywhere else in the world”.
As his Mandarin speaking Climb Leader guided him to the top of the iconic Bridge, safely attached to a static line running the full course of the Climb, Chen Pen Bin was particularly impressed with the robust safety procedures in place for Climbers, expressing his confidence in his safety harness.
As his guide revealed the secrets of the City and history of the harbour and the construction of the Bridge in the 1930s, Chen Pen Bin found particularly interesting the contrasting lack of safety harnesses used by construction workers at the summit of the Bridge when it was built.
Enjoying the blue sky and fresh air on the Climb the impressive athlete told his Climb leader he had been won over by Sydney’s weather and natural beauty. Noting that during his Marathon race on Sunday, rather than just focusing on finishing the event, he was able to enjoy taking in the fresh air and scenery.
Chen Pen Bin’s visit to Sydney for the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival was secured by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
Included in Chen Pen Bin’s itinerary was a Mandarin speaking BridgeClimb, as well as other ‘must do’ Sydney tourism experiences. He opted for a Twilight BridgeClimb and remained at the summit as the skies turned from bright blues to oranges to purples.
Chen Pen Bin walked in the footsteps of famous athletes, celebrities and royalty who have climbed the famous steel arches before him whilst in Sydney, including Katy Perry, Derek Zoolander, A.K.A. Ben Stiller and Prince Harry.
BridgeClimb has proudly hosted a number of impressive running athletes including Australian Aboriginal sprinter, Olympics 400m Gold Medallist Cathy Freeman and the fastest man on the Planet, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.
BridgeClimb offers a truly memorable experience, perfect for special occasions, family adventures, team building and corporate events. Information on and tickets for all BridgeClimb experiences are available at www.bridgeclimb.com or call (02) 8274 7777.
