BRAINERD — Ty Nelson described his season to a T.
When asked how confident he is competing in the triple jump the Brainerd Warriors junior said: “I’m flying high. I have high ambitions of going to state. I just have to keep it up.”

Nelson continued his ascent up the Brainerd Warriors honor roll Thursday, April 11, as he won the triple jump in 45-foot-2.5 at the Brainerd Quad. That puts Nelson second on Brainerd’s all-time list behind Troy Lindner’s school record of 45-8.25 set in 1995.
“The triple jump was good,” Nelson said. “I PR’d by about four inches. I was a little disappointed because I was going for the school record, but it’s still a PR. I did scratch three times. That is frustrating, but it’s also just building up that mental callus because at the bigger meets, I might have to do the same thing.”
Nelson was coming off a first-place showing in the long jump. He posted a 20-11 to tie for 14th all-time with Devin O’Reilly.
Nelson’s two victories helped Brainerd place first.
“I PR’d by about a foot in the long jump, which I was really happy with,” Nelson said. “I had to move my step back a little because of the wind, but that’s how it is during the outdoor season. You just have to adjust.”
Pequot Lakes senior Calia Chaney also adjusted her approach in the 1600-meter run. Chaney won the event with a 5:20.43, but was expecting a faster race.
“It didn’t go exactly how I wanted it to,” Chaney said. “I kind of thought the lead pack was going to go out a little bit faster. I was planning on sitting on them and then making a move halfway, but the lead pack went out a lot slower than expected so I just had to make a move sooner than I was expecting to make. I had to adapt.”

Chaney hoped for a solid mile time to qualify for the Hamline Elite meet. If she didn’t qualify for the mile she certainly did for the 800 run.
Chaney put down a first-place 2:22.77, which according to Athletic.net is the fastest 800 time for Class 2A this season. Brainerd’s Avery Duerr followed her in second, Madi Miller in third, Briana Blasing in fourth and Brook Wenz in sixth.
“I’m in much better shape right now than last year,” Chaney said. “Last year, around this time, I sprained my ankle so that threw a wrench in the whole game plan, but I’m excited for, hopefully, Hamline. I’m thinking my 800 time is good enough to get me there.”
Pequot’s Allison Gladen won the 100 and 300 hurdles and was part of Pequot’s 4x400 relay with Carlie Eggert, Chelby Wothe and Josie Taylor. The Patriots' 4x100 relay of Ashley Slaybaugh, Ava Merta, Hannah Sigler and Taylor won to lead the Pequot girls to third. That was behind second - place Brainerd, which received first-place finishes from its 4x800 relay of Wenz, Annelise Baird, Blasing and Miller in 10:04.45 and Abigail Tanner and Autumn Schiller tied for first on the pole vault with an 8-0 height.
Another Warrior winner was Lilly DeRosier in the 400 dash, who posted a 1:03.21.
“I just wanted to run as fast as I could the whole time,” DeRosier said. “I just tried not to let the wind in the backstretch slow me down and just run comfortably.”
DeRosier also adjusted her race to combat the wind. Normally she likes to accelerate at the 200 mark, but because of the wind on the backstretch, started her final acceleration later. It didn’t matter, as she won by more than three seconds.

“I think it was a good race,” DeRosier said. “I feel like I’m headed in the right direction. For our last indoor meet, I ran 1:04.14 and that set me at a good spot for the start of the season.”
This is DeRosier’s first full season of running the 400 and she is excited for what’s to come.
“I think I found my home,” DeRosier said. “I’m excited to see how much time I can drop over these next few years.
“It gives me a lot of confidence to win a meet. I think it helps you push yourself in practice when you don’t think you can do another rep, but you know you can. It helps me have somewhere to go. I want to break a minute this season so I’m striving for that.”
The Brainerd boys received wins from Brandon Stark in the 200 dash. Leif Hoffman bolted past the field to win the 800 run. He was also part of the first-place 4x800 relay with Jonathan Cowell, Carter Mielke and Joe Neumann.
Dylan Gross won the shot put with a 57-4 effort. Joe Smith captured his second straight pole vault title with an 11-6 effort.
Pequot’s Eli Hall lapped the field to win the 3200 in 9:31.17 and lead the Patriots boys to fourth.
