The Brainerd lakes community has contributed more than $15,000 for Asian tsunami relief efforts through the American Red Cross, as donations continue to pour in. Red Cross officials say the money will be used for blankets, sleeping mats, plastic sheeting, mosquito nets, etc.

Former Brainerd girls basketball standout Sarah Northway, the first Warrior girl to earn a Division I basketball scholarship, will be leaving the University of Arizona. The 6-foot sophomore is leaning toward Connecticut. She liked Arizona and her teammates, but wants more playing time.

A scarf-masked bandit and his accomplice ransacked a safe at the Oak Street Cricket store last night after forcing a young cashier to lie on the floor. The two men took an undetermined amount of cash and fled. Police followed their tracks in the snow for two blocks before losing the trail.

(Photo) Fire Chief Ray Shortridge, who will referee the next Golden Gloves card against Wadena at the armory, talks with two Brainerd fighters, Larry Clark and Shawn Moehrle. Featured boxer will be John Sundby, winner of 53 fights, who returns from six-months duty with the Army. Sundby is one of the best in the Upper Midwest Region.

Marlene Ramsey, 7, Brainerd's “sleeping girl,” died yesterday at Gillette Hospital in St. Paul. She was the victim of a form of sleeping sickness, becoming unconscious Dec. 14, 1943. She was either asleep or in a trance ever since. She received special treatments but her death was not unexpected.
100 years ago (1925)
Eugene Anderson, 3-1/2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Anderson, was operated on at St. Joseph's Hospital several weeks ago for appendicitis. He is so much improved that he was taken home yesterday.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). He launched a kite at 3 p.m. yesterday near the court house and it's still flying despite a near disaster when a truck caught the kite string. The weatherman says it will remain windy today.
