State officials have confirmed Minnesota's first case of chronic wasting disease. The always fatal brain disease was found in an elk on a farm owned by Clayton Lueck south of Aitkin. The five-year-old male tested positive after mysteriously dying Aug. 15. It was brought up from Stearns County. Lueck is voluntarily quarantining his 48-elk herd.

Thanks to the efforts of enthusiastic volunteers, a little light will be shed on Gregory Park tennis courts this fall. Brainerd Parks and Rec workers installed the Gregory lights last week as part of a project that will also light the park's skating rink, the baseball field at Memorial Park and the four tennis courts at Brainerd High School. Total cost is $82,000.

Fluoride won't be put back into Brainerd's water until the city gets a written ruling from the State Board of Health that fluoridation is required. The city's supply of fluoride ran out in June, and a new supply of 500 pounds – enough for 60 days – was received this month.

Four persons were given medical treatment and three are still hospitalized at St. Joseph's hospital suffering from food poisoning due to eating meat, said the attending physician. The meat was eaten at a party, the doctor said, and it was ham.
100 years ago (1922)
The baggage room at the train depot this morning looked like a small menagerie. A black bear cub had the center of attention, followed closely by a white Scotch collie pup and a deer head with a nice set of antlers. The bear cub was being sent to the fish and game department exhibit at the State Fair.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
