Design Story:
Past Life Chair
Designed 2022
Our desire to use sustainable materials whenever possible led us to create Past Life. The name is a nod to the recycled water bottles (PET) it’s made from. The polyester fiber achieves a felt-like surface that is strong and moldable. The molding process is much less costly and intricate than injection molding and less labor intensive than molding with fiberglass and resin.
The easily malleable material allowed us to create complex surfaces and contours, not to mention a pleasing soft shape that’s incredibly comfortable despite the material’s rigidity. The seat’s beautiful rim detail created structural geometry and allowed the seat shell to nestle inside and essentially hang on the metal frame. Simple in all the right ways, Past Life proves that good design can happen even without costly materials and complex manufacturing.
