After the crazy season this team gave us, I started to get a better sense of who Harris considers the Core by his comments and transactions. From my perspective, I consider these players to be part of the core as position players and worth building around: Meadows (CF), Greene (LF), Carpenter (RF), and Keith (2B). These players have proven their worth during the season and postseason cementing their status in the core. These are the players Harris will build around but that doesn't mean the rest of the roster is filled with expendable players. I liken several of the players as place holders until the cavalry arrives from Single A and others as unproven and worthy of an upgrade.
Looking at what I consider the core; RF, CF, LF, 2B positions are safe and an upgrade is not needed. I see C and SS as positions with tandems that Harris is happy with and again, not worthy of an upgrade. Rogers is there for the pitching staff and the hope is that Dingler can hit like he did at Triple A giving the Tigers an excellent tandem at catcher.
The same could be said at SS with Sweeney and Baez. Sweeney provided excellent defense at short and didn't look over matched during his brief time in the majors. Hopefully, the surgery fixes some of Baez' problems and can be the right-handed bat the infield needs so again, we are going forward with this tandem as well.
The holes I see on this team are the corner infield positions. I want to see Tork and Jung excel because that would be pretty cool having almost your entire team drafted by the Tigers, but every player doesn't pan out. It is too early to give up on these two, but this is where the Tigers can make upgrades. Tork will be given another year to prove he belongs, and Jung hasn't even started his career yet.
Personally, I would want someone who could play both positions in case either falter. I don't want Bregman (Boras) with his demands, Adames is a wet dream, and Walker has numerous suitors with big pockets that could take him out of our price range. Examining the moves Harris has made over the last two years, he's looking at someone with team control and who are great in the clubhouse.
Players such as Bohm and Iglesias are not on this list. Bohm has been disciplined before for immaturity and there is a reason Iglesias only plays on one-year deals for new teams every year. Players like Goldschmidt and Carlos Santana are good players but do not line up as multiyear players on this team and are bettered suited for contenders that are missing that one piece or veteran presence.
I think players like Yandy Diaz, Mountcastle and Jake Burger are players that Harris could go after. This is not to say these players are gold glove caliber, but they are good players and an upgrade over what we have. I think these are the players Harris will go after, and I have to agree with his process.
