A quick stop for gas ended in an armed carjacking, and now the U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for the accused gunman.
Dwaune Terrell Evans, 19, of Baltimore, is wanted on armed carjacking, carjacking in addition to first-degree assault and armed robbery charges.
According to charging documents, Evans is accused of carjacking a man at gunpoint at the Crown Gas Station on Liberty Heights Avenue in northwest Baltimore on May 3.
The man detailed that as he was pumping gas, a male approached him, pulled out a gun and demanded his keys and wallet. The victim complied with the armed gunman who then fled the scene in the victim’s car, according to the statement of charges.
Ten days after the incident, investigators said officers located the stolen vehicle about four miles away in a neighborhood on Diener Place in southwest Baltimore’s Irvington community. According to the charging documents, the carjacked vehicle was bearing a new, temporary tag that was later found to belong to a Chevy van. It’s unclear who the Chevy van was registered to, or if it had been reported stolen. The vehicle was towed to BPD for processing.
“After a vehicle is recovered it goes through forensic processing,” explained Al Maresca, Deputy Marshal with the U.S. Marshals Service. “They’re looking for any type of DNA or evidence that ultimately could lead to your prime suspect.”
Crime lab techs recovered two latent prints, including from the exterior of the front driver door, as well as from the radio screen from inside the vehicle, according to court documents. Investigators ran the prints through a database and three weeks later the results revealed a match, according to investigators.
“The prints came back to Dwaune Evans,” said Maresca.
According to investigators, Evans was already in the system and, in fact, has been accused of committing the crime of armed carjacking in the past.
Back in May 2022, Evans was arrested for an armed carjacking, according to the charging documents. It’s unclear what happened after that arrest as Evans would have been a juvenile at the time and Maryland law protects juvenile cases.
Evans, now an adult, is again accused of committing a violent crime.
Evans is described as standing at approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs about 145 lbs.
Anyone with information concerning his whereabouts is asked to contact the United States Marshals Service at 202-819-5058.
