I live in Minnesota and discovered BYCs about 1 year ago while searching Duck DuckGo. I read a number of articles and gained the confidence to move forward with obtaining 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Sapphire Gems that I got as chicks this past spring. I obtained a small mobile coop and build a run. They have recently started producing eggs which is exciting.
I have enjoyed learning from others with more experince and will continue to check in from time to time.
Thank you!

I loved my Sapphire Gems! We lost our last one this year and I saved her last 2 eggs and put it under a broody hen... well there was a miscommunication error (I had another dated egg in there that went past hatch date) and I told my partner that I had to go pull that egg out, it wasn't going to make it. They interpreted that as "I should lock the broody hen out from the eggs."

Nooooo! I literally cried because once I found out, it was like 8 hours later and I thought no way were they viable anymore. Well, I was wrong (after ordering a whole bunch of chicks, of course, to "replace" my Sapphire Gems.) And lo, and behold, one hatched, and it was female. Actually a RIR cross, so she has beautiful red hackles and is blue like her mom.

Anyways, sorry for the long story, I just love my blue girls (and my Rhode Island Reds.) I hope you do, too! Congrats on the eggs!

Thanks for joining! Welcome to BackYard Chickens!
