I recently purchased up 2 Indian runners and the male doesn’t seem to be able to walk properly, I rang the person I purchased him from and he told me there was nothing wrong with him when I picked him up, he was in a box so I didn’t get to see him running around. He seemed to think it’s because he was in a box for a few hours, however I have left him overnight and still no better today, he can swim properly just cannot walk properly, does anyone know what this is? I have attached screenshots from a video that I took of him as I can’t upload the video, it’s like he is waking on his heals

The video would be helpful - to upload it here, you'll have to upload it to a video platform such as youtube, or Vimeo, then copy/paste the link here.

If you pick the bird up, do you notice any obvious anatomical abnormalities to suggest what might be his problem? If you bend the joints do you hear clicking, are they fused together, do you notice any sore's around his hocks (intertarsal leg joints)?

At his age, walking on hocks is not a very good sign, and could be indicative of several things, but a nutritional deficiency such as niacin (B3) is possible; the problem could have also been due to some sort of incubation malposition that occurred at hatch, or a genetic defotmiy. Correction of the deformity at his age often grants a poor prognosis, but overall supportive care can help improve his life.

Excessive, constant pressure on his hocks will eventually cause the outer epidermal layer of skin to erode, and calluses over which frequently results in a bacterial invasion into the tissue. Such as scenario can be prevented by keeping him on soft grounds, and allowing him in water frequently to reduce the weight off his legs. In consideration the problem could be related to a nutritional defect, you could try administering a broad spectrum poultry vitamin for a few weeks and see if there are any improvements. Slings, and hock padding are additional measures that can be implemented to help reduce the chance of secondary conditions from devloping.
