Learn how to use your chicken harness!
Updated: Sadly, Kiwi the Buff Orpington has since passed away.
I know most people don't own a chicken harness. But, I met up with someone on this forum that needed help learning how to use one! I was like, "Wow! I'm not the only one!". I own a chicken harness, and I love to take Kiwi, one of my Buff Orpington's for walks, so I knew I could help them. In this article, I will help you, too!
Step 1. Catch the chicken from the run. I like to put her in an old dog cage I have to calm her down a little before I start.
After a few minutes, take her out of the cage. Talking to her will help keep her calm.
You will now need to bring your harness into the scene.
Put the big loop around her neck and slide it down a little like you would for a dog. The silver ring is where you clip the leash on, but don't do it yet. The arrow on the bottom is pointing to a buckle. This buckle will slip under her wing.
Next your going to need to get both the straps under her wings. Look at the pic above.
The two buckles will meet together sort of under her other wing. Buckle them carefully so you don't pinch her, as this might give her a bad experience.
This is what it should look like. And, the silver ring should be sitting in the middle of her back. It should look like this:
Now you can happily take your chicken for a walk!
This is her when she was younger walking on the leash:
I hope this article taught you about the very rare thing, the chicken harness! They also make different sizes. For roosters, hens, pullets, etc.
NOTE: This article was to show how to put the harness on, not about the training her to wear it part.
You can buy the chicken harness I got off amazon. It does NOT include a leash though. You can buy one with a leash, but it will be more expensive. I got my black one for $12. There are lots of other styles and colors, but I got black because that was the cheapest.
