Master outdoor apps

Lean the the pros and cons of popular free outdoor apps for hiking, wildflower and bird identification from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center, 8300 Wells Lake Road, in Fort Smith. Patrons will download some of the apps and test them at the event. Registration is not required.

Center sets fundraiser

Ozark Natural Science Center in Madison County will held its annual Call of the Wild fundraiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The event is at the center's new satellite location at Lake Fayetteville. Live music, food, guided hikes, games and science activities are planned. Visit www.onsc.us/call-of-the-wild for details.

Duo tops team field

Keith Brashers and Nicky Parson won the Northwest Arkansas Team Trail end of season championship bass tournament held May 4-5 at Beaver Lake. They had a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 31.15 pounds, good for the $8,000 first prize.

Ronnie Eldridge and Wes Usrey were second with 10 bass at 30.04 pounds. Landon Edwards and Taylor Surly were third with 10 bass at 29.3 pounds.

Fourth through 10th, all with 10 bass, were: fourth, Skyler Shockley, Randy Bilderback, 29.29; fifth, Robert Towner, Kevin Smith, 29.0; sixth, Hunter Hanby, Phil Hanby, 28.1; seventh, Steven Meador, Greg Meador, 27.56; eighth, Clint Williams, Jason Sandidge, 27.3, ninth, Travis Harriman, Matthew Sisk, 27.15; 10th, Bryan Wolfgang, Mike Roughton, 27.05.

Dam Site goes dry

Alcohol is prohibited at Dam Site North Park on Beaver Lake, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Chief Ranger Landon Thurman said the corps has received several reports from concerned visitors and businesses about littering, vandalism and public indecency from inebriated individuals at the park.

The measure took effect Monday. Those found with alcohol will be asked to pour it out and leave the park. Failure to cooperate may result in a citation to appear in federal court.

Hill hikers walks

Ozark Hill Hikers invite all walkers to join two walks. There is a $4 fee for each walk.

A walk will be held May 21 in Bella Vista. Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at CVS Pharmacy, 2833 Bella Vista Way, in Bella Vista. Walkers will choose either 5- or 10-kilometer walk.

On May 22, walkers are invited to join a walk at the Pea Ridge National Military Park. Registration is from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at the visitor center, 15930 U.S. 62 North in Garfield. Routes of 5- or 10-kilometers will be available.

Go for the slam

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission recognizes fishing accomplishments with a 2024 Grand Slam Award for qualifying resident or nonresident anglers

To win a Grand Slam Award and a colorful Grand Slam Award sticker, catch a catfish, sunfish, crappie, trout and bass during 2024. There is no minimum size requirement. Bass includes any species of bass. Take a photo of each fish and submit the photo and information to the online Grand Slam Award application at agfc.com.

Hike to see sunrise

A sunrise hike to the Yellow Rock overlook at Devil's Den State Park is set for 5 to 8 a.m. May 31. Staff at the J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center in Springdale will host the hike. Meet at 5 a.m. at the Yellowrock Trailhead near Campground A. Headlamps and flashlights will be provided.

It's a 1.5-mile hike of moderate difficulty to the overlook 300 feet above Lee Creek. Registration is required. Call (833) 356-0847 or go to agfc.com to register.

See birds at preserve

Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society and the Northwest Arkansas Land Trust will co-lead a field trip to Betty Hinshaw Bird Sanctuary in Springdale at 9 a.m. June 8. Birders will have the opportunity to explore this newly protected 25-acre sanctuary along Wildcat Creek.

The trip will consist a mile of hiking with flat, but uneven, ground. Audubon membership isn't required. Participants are asked to register for the trip at [email protected] with the trip name, your name and the number attending.

Hike with a guide

Guided hikes at the Ozark Natural Science Center in Madison County will be held at 9 a.m. the first Saturday of each month through December. Hikes are with the center's teacher naturalists. Cost is by donation. Registration is required. Visit onsc.us/events to sign up.

Youth campers see nature

Ozark Natural Science Center's Fledgling Summer Camp for youths 9-14 is set for June 6-7 at the center in Madison County.

The camp is designed to be an introductory overnight camp experience for children who may not have been away from home before or would prefer a short nature camp. Cost is $165. Go to onsc.us/events to register.

Run trails at Coler

Registration is open for the third annual Paradise Found 5-kilometer trail run set for 7 a.m. July 13 at Coler Mountain Bike Preserve in Bentonville. Race start is at the Homestead near Airship Coffee at the preserve. It is limited to 300 runners.
