‘We must keep doors open to bridge gaps, work for peace’
Dr Sheikh Mohammad Al-Issa visits the nuns

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 16: In a deeply symbolic and significant moment, Dr Sheikh Mohammad Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL) and a prominent advocate for moderate Islam, met with the nuns at the cloistered Santa Chiara monastery in Attimis, Italy. This encounter, facilitated by honey produced by the monastery’s bees, symbolized the unity and shared values of peace between different faiths. Al-Issa, who travels the world promoting interfaith dialogue, emphasized the importance of opening doors to one another and fostering friendship, echoing the message of peace upheld by Pope Francis. This meeting marked a profound step in building bridges of understanding between Islam and Christianity, recalling the historic meeting between Saint Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt. Like prayer, bees transcend boundaries, serving as silent and tireless ambassadors of peace.

On one special day, the bees of the Santa Chiara apiary at the small cloistered monastery of Attimis, nestled in the hills of Friuli, became exactly that: their honey brought together two worlds that, though seemingly distant, share an undeniable closeness. In this special place, where about thirty nuns embrace the world with prayer and intercession, they hosted Al-Issa, leader of moderate Islam. He came from Makkah to meet them but also the bees that brought them together thanks to the honey received as a gift from a mutual friend, the Lebanese priest Adel Nasr, who founded the monastery with his mother superior Anna Chiara. After the end of the private and exclusive meeting, Al-Issa says it was unforgettable, about which, he promises to speak to the Pope, whom he is expected to see in the next few days in Rome, in the wake of the commitment to dialogue and peace that he tirelessly carries forward with his non-governmental organization that represents Muslims in the world.

Harmony
He says, “We are happy because this place and this meeting reflect the message of peace that they represent in harmony with the message of peace of Pope Francis.” In this borderland that knows well what war is, as the Pope did in Trieste, he invites us to always keep the doors of dialogue open: “We came here because it is precisely a door, an opening of friendship that is what Pope Francis meant because we must continue to open ourselves to one another” “This is a new but already very deep and fraternal friendship, of which we are proud,” he says, promising to return soon. The visit of the sheikh of the East to Attimis almost seems like the restitution of the meeting of Saint Francis of Assisi with the Sultan of Egypt who after 800 years still questions us: “This represents a dialogue that builds bridges that we cross to spread peace in the world”. Dr Al-Issa is a prominent global advocate for moderate Islam, focusing on promoting empathy, understanding, and cooperation among diverse communities and faiths. As Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL), he has been a key figure in fostering interfaith dialogue and building partnerships worldwide.

His notable efforts include visiting Auschwitz in 2020, meeting Pope Francis to forge a historic agreement in 2017 and leading peace initiatives with representatives of the Abrahamic religions. Dr. Al-Issa’s leadership has earned praise for advancing moderate Islam, countering extremism and promoting coexistence. He has also spearheaded agreements with major Jewish and Christian institutions and continues to advocate for dialogue and education to combat hate and extremism. Over the last three years, Dr. Al-Issa has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia, meeting with dignitaries and parliamentarians from the fields of justice, law and human rights and major faith-based and community leaders.
