Bafta film nominations 2025: Conclave and Emilia Pérez go head to head

The Bafta film award nominations have been announced in a ceremony hosted by Mia McKenna-Bruce, last year’s Bafta Rising Star winner, and The White Lotus’s Will Sharpe, who won at TV award in 2020. David Tennant is due to host the actual ceremony on February 16 at the Royal Festival Hall.

The nominations fire the starting gun on the awards race which culminates in the 2025 Academy Awards – a decent showing at the Baftas is often a strong predictor of future Oscar glory. In 2024, after all, the top films across the biggest six categories were replicated a few weeks later at the Academy Awards.

This year, there are a few frontrunners. The joyous, bonkers Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez – about a transgender drug lord – won most awards at the Golden Globes and has received 11 nominations. Meanwhile, Adrien Brody’s mammoth, state-of-the-nation epic The Brutalist looks like a good bet for eventual Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, being honoured in both categories here and taking nine Bafta nominations overall. And the commercial success of Wicked is sure to be tipped at the Academy Awards, too, with seven nominations.

What about the wild cards? The unexpected dark horse of this year’s race is surely Edward Berger’s Conclave with 12 nominations. His previous film, All Quiet on the Western Front, also shook up the race in 2022 when Berger’s debut got the most nominations, though it didn’t quite translate that haul into Oscars success.
