DISHWASHER NOT DRAINING?
3 REASONS WHY
Got a dishwasher that just won’t drain? We want to help.
Let’s look at three potential causes.
1. Standing water in the filter area
You’re likely noticing this water as you’re going to remove your dishwasher filters for regular cleaning. Water in this area is actually perfectly normal, useful even. It’s there to keep the seals from drying up. It drains when a cycle starts and is replaced with fresh water at the end of the cycle. See the picture below for the normal amount of water that should be in this area.
2. Garbage disposer problems
If the dishwasher is connected to a garbage disposer, make sure the knockout plug has been removed from the disposer inlet.

If that’s not the problem, check for any obstructions in the drain or garbage disposer. Run the disposer to make sure it’s clear of any food.
3. Air gap issue
A dishwasher air gap allows air in so the dishwasher can properly drain without creating a vacuum. It fits onto the top of the sink and, when working properly, it doesn’t do anything other than allow air into the dishwasher for proper draining. However, if it’s clogged or blocked, it will cause drainage problems. If you have an air gap installed, check for any clogs or blockages per the manufacturer’s instructions.
