There’s something decidedly satisfying about a well-organized set of kitchen knives. Not only is it safer than simply reaching into a messy drawer to search for your favorite blade, but it also adds an element of style to your kitchen. Knife blocks get a bad rap for taking up too much space, but we think a magnetic knife holder can be a game changer and the ultimate hack for small kitchens—if you choose the right one.

Apart from saving space, the best magnetic knife holders will make it easier to see all your tools at once and help avoid scratching or wearing down your blades. To help you choose the right one, we put 24 models to the test with our own precious knives and paid special attention to ease of installation, magnet strength, durability, and design over several weeks.

About Our Tests

We tested 24 magnetic knife holders—14 wall-mounted and 10 countertop models—over a several-week period. After installing or assembling each in our kitchen, we attached a variety of kitchen knives, kitchen shears, and honing rods, and used them as part of our regular cooking routine over the course of three weeks. Each magnetic knife holder was then rated on the following attributes:

  • Ease of Installation: How easy or difficult is the installation process? Once mounted, is the knife holder secure, or does it feel loose?
  • Design: Does the magnetic knife holder seem high-quality? For strips, does the magnet extend fully to either side or is there a significant amount of unusable space? For countertop holders, how much space does it take up? How easy is it to fit and arrange a variety of knives and tools?
  • Magnet Strength: Do knives adhere to the holder securely? Is the magnet so strong that it’s difficult to remove the knives?
  • Durability: Does the knife holder sustain scratches or dings easily?

Why It’s Great: Multiple finishes available; ideal magnet strength and coverage; minimalist design; good value

Grain of Salt: Wood finishes may require oiling or extra maintenance

Our tests revealed that WÜSTHOF puts the same time and care into its knife holders as it does its actual kitchen knives. This modern wall-mounted holder is beautiful and durable, boasting three different finishes (acacia wood, walnut, and stainless steel) and a super simple, fast installation process.

After storing a collection of OXO knives and kitchen shears—including two bread knives, four steak knives, two chef’s knives, and one paring knife—on this knife holder, we found that everything held very securely. At the same time, the magnet wasn’t so strong that it was difficult to take the knives off the strip, allowing us to continually use it throughout the day without worrying about anything falling off.

We love that the strip extends almost fully to each side rather than having a lot of dead space, which can sometimes be dangerous if you’re not paying enough attention to where you’re placing your knives. The thin, minimalist design blends seamlessly into the rest of the kitchen, all while saving countertop space.

The Details: Stainless steel, acacia wood, or walnut wood; 18 inches; 2.87 pounds

Why It’s Great: Available in multiple lengths; thick stainless steel; budget-conscious

Grain of Salt: Shows fingerprints and scratches easily

Short on wall space? This stainless steel magnetic knife strip sticks directly to your refrigerator, though it includes two screws to mount on the wall as well. It’s crafted from 304 stainless steel that’s resistant to corrosion and brushed to a satin finish, while the overall thickness of the strip makes it suitable for other uses like hanging construction tools or craft supplies. We also like that it’s available in a range of sizes from 10 inches to 24 inches. The magnet—which reaches the entire length—is so strong that it even caught our tools if we missed the strip and hit the side by accident.

The only qualm we found with this magnetic knife strip is that it’s easy to smudge with fingerprints and did show a few scratches during our tests. However, for a budget-conscious pick that performs this well, we’re willing to overlook some aesthetics.

The Details: Stainless steel; 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, or 24 inches; 1.4 pounds to 3.39 pounds

Why It’s Great: Attractive wood design; durable finish; holds a lot of knives

Grain of Salt: Surface area works best for larger knives

Because of the large surface area, this dual-sided magnetic knife block can hold larger blades like cleavers and chef’s knives that may not fit as comfortably as they would on a strip. On the other hand, the design is made to fit many different-sized knives, so it may not be as efficient as a space saver for those looking to store shorter knives—such as steak knives or paring knives—as they’ll end up with a lot of unused space.

Performance-wise, it stood in place without tipping over at any point during our tests. The magnet is very strong, though we never had issues removing knives, and our knives didn’t shift once. We love the warm color of the wood, which held up very well without any scratches or dings.

The Details: Wood; 4 x 12 x 10 inches; 4.4 pounds

Why It’s Great: Thoughtful, space-saving design; available in three different finishes; preassembled

Grain of Salt: Expensive; base tips slightly while removing knives

We were able to store an entire set of Zwilling J.A. Henckels knives on this block, including a bread knife, two chef’s knives, a utility knife, a paring knife, and a honing rod. The magnets held on strong, even to the weighty honing rod, and nothing rolled or slipped off during the testing period. The tiered design makes it easy to see all of the knives at once while also allowing for the placement of multiple lengths of knives without taking up extra space.

It comes preassembled, so it is ready to use right out of the box. While the base is wide and meant for added stability on the counter, we did experience some tipping while removing knives due to the power of the magnets. It’s also lightweight for its size and available in three different wood finishes. We tested the dark wood finish, and it still looked like new after testing without any scratches. Although it is a bit pricey, this magnetic block is beautiful and perfect for those who want to display their set of high-quality knives.

The Details: Wood; 11.25 x 10 x 6 inches; 3.27 pounds

Why It’s Great: Non-slip rubber base; made of high-quality Italian beechwood; narrow design

Grain of Salt: Only available in one color

The Made In knife block is handmade using stunning Italian beechwood and neodymium magnets—one of the strongest types of magnets available commercially. Each side can comfortably fit four knives, and the block also comes with a lifetime warranty.

We love the light, warm color of the beechwood and the sleek, minimal aesthetic. It feels like a sturdy, high-quality piece right out of the box (extra points for coming preassembled), and the narrow design doesn’t take up too much space on the countertop. The entire surface isn’t magnetized, but rather, there are designated spots for each knife, making it easier to tell which knife goes where. Overall, this is an impressive piece that’s as functional as it is beautiful, and any chef or home cook would be proud to display it in their kitchen. If you’re looking for an entire set, Made In also offers the countertop block paired with its four-piece kitchen knife set in a range of handle colors.

Our Takeaway

The WÜSTHOF 18-inch Magnetic Holder was the best magnetic knife holder we tested, boasting an ideal combination of magnet strength and coverage, minimalist design, and multiple available finishes—all for an excellent value. For a less expensive option, we also love the Gorilla Grip Stainless Steel Magnetic Knife Strip.

How to Pick the Right Magnetic Knife Holder

Material

Choosing the right material for your magnetic knife holder is about more than just aesthetics—though that’s also important. For metal, opt for stainless steel since it is smooth, corrosion-resistant, and easy to clean. For wood, keep in mind that you’ll probably have to treat it with food-grade mineral oil from time to time, and while many people prefer the look of wood over metal, it’s also less durable.

Size

Be sure to consider the size of your knife holder in relation to the size of your kitchen knife collection. Shorter countertop holders and strips are great for shorter knives like steak knives and paring knives since you won’t end up with a lot of unused space where the blades end. Strips are ideal for smaller spaces since they won’t take up much room on your counter, while countertop models may be better suited for larger kitchens with plenty of extra space to spare. If you have your heart set on a specific magnetic knife strip that’s on the shorter side, consider combining two of the same, either right next to or above and below each other.

Installation

Magnetic knife strips should come with simple, straightforward manufacturer’s instructions for installation. This typically involves drilling holes into the wall using a template or exact measurements, then mounting the strip onto the screws. For renters or those who simply want to avoid putting holes in the wall, look for a countertop knife holder or a strip that sticks directly onto the refrigerator.

Magnet Strength

There’s a happy medium when it comes to magnet strength. You don’t want the magnet to be so strong that you feel like you’re going to rip the strip off the wall or cause the countertop holder to topple while reaching for your tools. At the same time, you absolutely need the magnet to be strong enough to keep your knives safely in place while not in use.

The Leftovers: Other Magnetic Knife Holders We Tested

We were impressed by the Schmidt Brothers Downtown Block in terms of quality and aesthetics. The magnets were secure and the block itself looked beautiful on the counter. However, we ultimately felt that it would work better for those with larger kitchens since it's very bulky and takes up a good amount of space. Similarly, the Misen Magnetic Knife Strip had a powerful magnet and a lovely ash wood design, but the lack of mounting instructions and difficult installation made us weary to recommend it to anyone other than intermediate or professional cooks.

Although the Le Creuset Magnetic Knife Block featured high-quality wood, a small footprint, and a stable metal base, it surprised us with a poorly performing magnet. It wasn’t strong or consistent enough to hold our kitchen tools securely, and we often found our knives shifting and slipping to the side or right off the block during tests.

Common Questions

Where should you put a magnetic knife holder?

While it really is a personal choice and largely depends on the specific layout of your kitchen, it's common to mount magnetic knife holders on the backsplash behind the stove, above the sink, or on any other small, unused portion of the wall. Also, make sure that knife holders are inaccessible to children or in spots where they won’t be accidentally bumped by pets.

How do you install a magnetic knife holder?

Look for a magnetic knife holder that comes with specific instructions on mounting, installation, and assembly, since doing any of these incorrectly can lead to safety issues. Most countertop models come preassembled or require simply attaching the base, but magnetic strips generally include drilling holes into the wall.

How do you clean a magnetic knife holder?

If your magnetic knife holder is in a place near the stove or sink, there’s a good chance that it will pick up some grease smudges or splatters. Most holders are easy to wipe down with a clean cloth after removing the knives, but wooden models may require regular maintenance with mineral oil to keep them in good condition.
