Have Dairy Queen-Style Blizzards at Home With This Genius Hack

Enjoy your favorite frozen treat without leaving home.

As I was scrolling through the Instagram Explore page looking at food video after food video, I came across this genius trick for making a Dairy Queen-style "Blizzard" at home. I immediately knew I had to give it a try because not only do I love a Dairy Queen Blizzard, but I love testing out restaurant and chain hacks so that I can easily make things at home whenever a craving hits.

And did it work? In short, the answer is yes. But because it barely required any ingredients, took very little time, and was an excuse to eat ice cream and Oreos, it would have been a success regardless of how much I thought it resembled a Blizzard.

With that being said, I was pleasantly surprised that this DIY Blizzard did in fact taste just like the one you'd get at any of their locations—if not better. It has the texture of something between hard ice cream and soft serve, the flavors of vanilla bean and cookies and cream, and just the right amount of crunch from the mix-ins. The best part is that you're in full control of how many goodies to add, so you could either go light or extra heavy. The serving size is also very generous, seeing as though you can make yourself as big of a Blizzard as you'd like.

How to Make a Dairy Queen Blizzard At Home

The hack is simple and all you need is two ingredients: vanilla ice cream and Oreos. This is of course if you're making the Oreo Cookie Blizzard like me, but the beauty is that you can swap the Oreos for other candies like Reeses, or marshmallows and graham crackers to make their S'mores Blizzard.

You'll also only need one [very important] tool: a mixer. It should preferably be a standing KitchenAid-style mixer, but as long as the ice cream is soft enough, you should be able to make do with a handheld electric mixer. To make this DQ Blizzard, all you have to do is blend the ice cream until it's soft and reassembles the texture of soft serve. Once it's smooth enough, add the Oreo cookies and continue to mix until the cookies are crushed and combined with the ice cream.

Ingredients:

  • 1 container Breyers vanilla ice cream (or any preferred ice cream)
  • Oreos

Instructions:

  1. Place the mixing bowl of the electric mixer in the freezer for 10 minutes. Remove and return to the mixer, then add all of the ice cream.
  2. On medium speed, mix the ice cream until it's smooth and combined but not too soft, about 1 minute. Add the Oreos and mix until Oreos are crushed and just combined, another minute.
  3. Serve the homemade Dairy Queen Blizzard with more Oreos crumbled over top, if desired.

Variations to This Recipe

As mentioned above, you can easily swap the Oreos out for any other type of candy or ingredients. Here are some other fun combinations to test out:

  • Vanilla ice cream with pretzels, caramel, and chocolate
  • Strawberry ice cream with graham crackers
  • Peanut butter ice cream with puppy chow
  • Vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge
