Food News and Trends Pet Food Brand Issues Voluntary Recall Over Salmonella Fears The recall includes a number of brands sold by Midwestern Pet Foods. By Tim Nelson Published on March 29, 2021 We may never know what dog food tastes like to our dogs, but there's no doubt that they love the stuff. The challenge (at least as of now) is that they're reliant on us humans to actually acquire food for them. So if you want to make sure your pup is in tip-top shape, you should be aware of a recent recall affecting a big ol' swath of dog foods sold by Midwestern Pet Foods. According to the FDA (which I guess also covers pet food recalls), the Indiana-based brand has issued a voluntary recall for a wide range of dog and cat food brands with certain expiration dates due to salmonella concerns associated with their Monmouth, Illinois production facility. The list includes brands like CanineX, Earthborne Holistic, Sportmix Wholesomes, and includes product marketed towards dogs and cats of all ages and sizes. Many of the recalled lots are for items with various meat-based product, but more benign-sounding products have also made the recall list. The expiration dates mostly range from April to September 2022. Chalabala via Getty Images The issue at hand is a potential risk of salmonella, which, as it turns out, can definitely affect pets. Pet symptoms of salmonella include lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, and other decidedly less pleasant manifestations of illness. Contact your vet if symptoms show up, but the good news is that there haven't yet been any reports of animals sickened by any of the various recalled pet foods. We humans don't need to eat the tainted pet food to potentially put ourselves at risk, either. The FDA notes that handling anything that may have salmonella could pose a health risk, especially if you don't thoroughly wash your hands (a good rule of thumb these days). Chalk it up as one more reason to take the recall seriously — as if your precious furry angel's health wasn't already reason enough. You can find additional info (and incredibly low-res jpegs of what each dog food brand looks like) here, so be sure to study up to keep your pup safe from salmonella. After all, a healthy pet is a happy pet. Was this page helpful? Thanks for your feedback! Tell us why! Other Submit
