How to Make Easy Biscuits and Gravy

Guaranteed to get your day off to a warm and cozy start.

Biscuits and gravy. It's exactly what it sounds like. Rich, creamy, savory gravy (sausage gravy, thank you) served atop freshly baked biscuits. It's a Southern breakfast classic that's as warm, cozy, and filling as it gets. That it's easy to make and affordable enough to feed a crowd just adds to the list of reasons why you need to learn how to make it. Nicole McLaughlin, aka NicoleMcmom, likes to dish it up to her family to fuel them through busy vacation days full of activities, and she's here to show you how she makes it. Check out the video up top, and get recipes and tips below for homestyle biscuits and gravy.

Ingredients

  • 1 (12-ounce) package maple flavored sausage (or any flavor sausage you prefer). Note: Use bulk sausage instead of sausage links.
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • salt and pepper to taste (Nicole likes to add a few shakes of hot sauce, too)

Directions

  1. Place sausage in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown and crumbly. Remove sausage with a slotted spoon leaving the drippings in the pan — Note: Nicole opts to leave the sausage in the pan. Stir in the butter until melted. Add flour, and stir until smooth. Reduce heat to medium, and cook until light brown. Gradually whisk in milk, and cook until thickened. Stir in cooked sausage if you removed it. Reduce heat, and simmer for 12 to 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and optional hot sauce. If gravy becomes too thick, stir in a little more milk.

For the biscuit portion of this match made in comfort food heaven, you can go with homemade — Nicole likes this recipe for Chef John's Buttermilk Biscuits — or to keep it super easy, just bake a batch of canned biscuits. Because it's all about the gravy, isn't it?

How to serve biscuits and gravy

To serve, split steaming hot biscuits in half and place them face-up on a plate. Ladle on the sausage gravy so it can soak into the tender biscuits, grab a fork, and get ready for the mmms and aaahs.
