Because research is needed to identify the conditions that facilitate or impede the prevalence of perceived workplace discrimination, the authors examined the effects of demographics and demographic similarity on the prevalence of sex-and race/ethnicity-based perceived workplace discrimination. Results from a national survey of 763 full-time, United States employees show perceived sex-based discrimination at work was more prevalent among female than male employees, and perceived race-based discrimination at work was more prevalent among Black and Hispanic than White employees. Additionally, perceived racial/ethnic discrimination was less prevalent among those with same-race/ethnicity supervisors. The effect of employee-coworker sex similarity on perceived sex discrimination was significant only for women, and the effects of supervisor-subordinate racial similarity on the prevalence of perceived racial discrimination varied between Black and White respondents, depending on employee-residentialcommunity racial similarity.

This article traces the contours of a comparative, global, crossdisciplinary, and multiparadigmatic field that construes ethnicity, race, and nationhood as a single integrated family of forms of cultural understanding, social organization, and political contestation. The Jewish peoples have endured thousands of years of discrimination and subjugation, yet during this new millennium, Jews and antisemitism are conspicuously absent from university ethnic studies classroom discourse in the United States. Those scholars, determined to penetrate the walls of the multicultural education stronghold, are met with an ebb and flow of silence and vociferous resistance. A primary rationale for multiculturalists ignoring antisemitism appears to be the Zionist question and how they, themselves, perceive Israel's relationship with Palestine. This qualitative case study analyzed interviews of six prominent scholars in the areas of multiculturalism, history, and Judaism through a critical pedagogical lens. Throughout this paper, the author explores his personal experiences in regard to educational multiculturalists and the dismissal of Jews as a persecuted group. From discourse analysis of themes and recurrent meanings in the data, it is evident that the majority of study participants believe that Israel's behavior toward the Palestinians is unacceptable, yet that does not justify the large-scale generalizations of the Jewish people in the United States. As a result, this paper argues for the inclusion of the Jewish experience into university multicultural discourse.

Jonathan Woocher’s 2012 essay, “Reinventing Jewish Education for the 21st Century,” o ered
a distillation of concepts and prescriptions he
had been incubating for the better part of a decade (Woocher, 2012a). At its core was a
vision of a learner-centered educational system where Jewish wisdom (i.e., Torah) becomes a resource for personal meaning-making. Those familiar with the trajectory of Woocher’s thinking were surely not surprised by his enthusiasm for prosumerism or his relative sanguinity about
the decline of legacy institutions. But they might have been caught o  guard by the virtual absence of any reference to a role for community and Jewish peoplehood in his proposed educational paradigm. For Woocher, Jewish community had been an animating concern that presaged his interest in communal dynamics, guided his work as the longtime executive director of the Jewish Education Service of North America ( JESNA), and grounded his e orts on behalf of Jewish continuity and renaissance. Was Woocher’s silence on community in “Reinventing Jewish Education” indicative of a radical rethinking of the bases of Jewish life?

In recent years, Black poets and other poets of color have increasingly won many of the most prestigious prizes and awards within the majority and historically white field of US poetry. This article traces the interventions (writing, activism, and institution building) that have resulted in this "change." Rather than understanding the racial politics of poetry as an endlessly revolving door of scandals, or simply as a contest over prizes and economies of prestige, this article attends to the relationship between the world of poetry and the history of social movements, an exchange often mediated through the work of writers’ collectives. In particular, this article delineates how the interventions of Black poets and other poets of color (both individually and collectively) have shifted the world of poetry, while at the same time mirroring, connecting with, and speaking back to broader movements that seek to transform the world writ large.

This article argues for a reconceptualization of the intersections of race, gender and class as simultaneous processes of identity, institutional and social practice in order to redress the lack of attention to these intersections in feminist organization studies. Grounding my argument on a brief critique of white liberal feminism from the perspective of women of colour, I examine other feminist frameworks beyond the dominant liberal paradigm and identify their possible contributions to the study of intersections in organization theory and practice. Specifically, I propose theoretical and methodological interventions for researching and practicing more forcefully and intentionally the simultaneity of race, gender and class in organizations, including researching and publicizing the hidden stories at the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, class, nation and sexuality; identifying, untangling and changing the differential impact of everyday practices in organizations and identifying and linking internal organizational processes with external societal processes. I conclude with some reflections on the possible implications of these proposals for each of us, scholars and practitioners of gender and organization.

A sequel to the groundbreaking volume Race and Racism in Modern East Asia: Western and Eastern Constructions, the present volume examines in depth interactions between Western racial constructions of East Asians and local constructions of race and their outcomes in modern times. Focusing on China, Japan and the two Koreas, it also analyzes the close ties between race, racism and nationalism, as well as the links race has had with gender and lineage in the region. Written by some of the field's leading authorities, this insightful and engaging 23-chapter volume offers a sweeping overview and analysis of racial constructions and racism in modern and contemporary East Asia that is unsurpassed in previous scholarship.

Designed to encourage critical thinking about history, the Major Problems in American History series introduces students to both primary sources and analytical essays on important topics in US history. This collection is designed for courses on Latina/o history.

This study discusses the relations between the peoples known as Sarmatians, Alans, Vandals, and other groups in the context of fluid identities and political affinities of Late Antiquity and early medieval Europe. It is argued that the Vandals underwent a substantial transformation from being dominantely farmers to centre on horse breeding and mounted warfare. In this process, Sarmatian and Alanian influence on the Vandals was crucial. One could speak of a 'Sarma-tisation' of Vandal warfare, economy, dressing, and conduct, but also of a Vandal confederation of identities to which other 'barbarian' peoples could be connected .

An important text mining problem is to find, in a large collection of texts, documents related to specific topics and then discern further structure among the found texts. This problem is especially important for social sciences, where the purpose is to find the most representative documents for subsequent qualitative interpretation. To solve this problem, we propose an interval semi-supervised LDA approach, in which certain predefined sets of keywords (that define the topics researchers are interested in) are restricted to specific intervals of topic assignments. We present a case study on a Russian LiveJournal dataset aimed at ethnicity discourse analysis.

Reports of stress and negative emotion may be important predictors of health outcomes. However, whether discrete emotions or stress measures are more useful, whether they contribute independently to outcome, and whether these variables relate to health equally across ethnic groups remain unclear. In the current study, 207 US-born European American, US-born African American, Black English-speaking Caribbean, and Dominican men aged 40 years and older completed measures of somatic symptomology, trait emotion, and stress. Sadness and stress independently predicted reports of somatic symptomology, even when examined concurrently, and with demographics controlled; trait anger did not predict somatic symptomology. Finally, and as expected, the relation between trait emotions and somatic symptomology varied across the groups. While levels of sadness were positively associated with somatic symptomology among US-born European American and Dominican men, they were negatively associated with symptoms among Black English-speaking Caribbean men, and the relation for anger also differed marginally across groups. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for differentiating among discrete emotions and stress as well as their interactions with ethnicity when examining reports of somatic symptomology. We suggest that the impact of psychological characteristics on health must be considered within cultural and ethnic contexts before they are fully understood.

In historical sources, literature on the history of the Ashtarkhanids (1601-1756) plays an important role in highlighting the political, economic, social and cultural processes in the history of Uzbekistan until the middle of the 18th century. Although various written sources on this period have been published today, they are characterized by relatively poor coverage of the issue of the ethnic composition of the population.

Objective: To investigate factors associated with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Methods: A case-control study was used to investigate demographic and behavioural factors, and causative agents associated with PID. Results: A total of 381 participants were recruited: 140 patients, and 105 and 136 controls in tubal ligation and general practice groups, respectively. When compared with a PID-free tubal ligation control group, increased risk of PID was associated with: age ,25 years; age at first sexual intercourse ,20 years; non-white ethnicity; not having had children; a self-reported history of a sexually transmitted disease; and exposure to Chlamydia trachomatis. When compared with a general practice control group, increased risk was associated with: age ,25 years; age at first sexual intercourse ,15 years; lower socioeconomic status; being single; adverse pregnancy outcome; a self-reported history of a sexually transmitted disease; and exposure to C trachomatis. Of the cases, 64% were not associated with any of the infectious agents measured in this study (idiopathic). Conclusions: A high proportion of cases were idiopathic. PID control strategies, which currently focus on chlamydial screening, have to be reviewed so that they can prevent all cases of PID. Behavioural change is a key factor in the primary prevention of PID, and potential modifiable risk factors were associated with PID.

Like most countries in Europe, Bulgaria has a population that is characterised by significant ethnocultural variety. Bulgaria is an example of tolerant co-existence among the representatives of30 ethnic and religious groups on the Balkan Peninsula. As of 2002, the share of the Bulgarian citizens with minority ethnicity exceeded 16%. The focus in the present study is on ethnic identity as a general phenomenon that is relevant across groups. The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) consists of 14 items assessing three aspects of ethnic identity: positive ethnic attitudes and sense of belonging (5 items); ethnic identity achievement, including both exploration and commitment of identity issues (7 items); ethnic behaviours or practices (2 items) and Other-group orientation measure (6 items). I 68 high school students (89 Bulgarians, 47 Turks, and 32 Roma; 81'bbys and 87 girls; average age 17) participated in the study and completed the questionnaire. The relationship of ethnic identity to various demographic variables and to self-esteem was examined. The ethnic identity components were analysed separately for the three ethnic groups. We examined whether support for tough immigration legislation reflects identity-neutral enforcement of law or identity-relevant defense of privilege. Participants read a fabricated news story in which law-enforcement personnel detained a person due to "reasonable suspicion" that he was an undocumented immigrant. We manipulated descriptions of the detainee so that he was either (a) an undocumented immigrant (both studies), (b) a documented immigrant (Study 1), or (c) a U.S. citizen (Study 2) of either Mexican or Canadian origin. Participants in both studies endorsed tougher punishment of an undocumented detainee and rated tough treatment as more fair when the detainee was of Mexican than Canadian origin (regardless of documentation status). Across both studies, the patterns of ethnocentric exclusion-harsher treatment toward Mexican immigrants than Canadian immigrants-were particularly pronounced among participants who defined American identity in terms of assimilation to Anglocentric cultural values (e.g., being able to speak English). Overall, results suggest that people may support tough measures to restrict immigration to defend against symbolic threats-especially threats that cultural "others" pose to Anglocentric understandings of American identity.

When Ivory Towers Were Black: A Story about Race in America's Cities and Universities is a longitudinal historical account of what was undoubtedly the most audacious effort in the nation to ride the 1960s wave of black power and transform an Ivy League university's elitist practices on campus and in the surrounding community. Written to appeal to community-engaged faculty, students, and community activists in a variety of fields, the book (1) assesses the triumphs and subsequent unraveling of experiments to achieve racial justice in Columbia University's School of Architecture and in the nearby Harlem/East Harlem community, (2) demonstrates how those triumphs lived on in the lives of the school's ethnic minority recruits and as best practices in university-community relationships, and in the fields of architecture and urban planning, and (3) derives lessons learned about public scholarship and service to marginalized minority communities in todays so-called colorblind society.  Its subject matter lies at the confluence of urban history, higher education, and ethnic studies, its story narrated by a cohort of the school's highly accomplished ethnic minority alumni (the author included), who offer a unique from-below perspective on Columbia's well-documented university-community conflicts of the 1960s

This paper aims to examine and compare the ethnic identity of youth from the ethnic minority and majority groups in Viet Nam. Students' ethnic identity was assessed by applying Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) (Phinney, 1992). The participants were conveniently selected from a total of 800 students in two colleges and two high schools. The results indicated that for youth from ethnic minority groups, the level of ethnic identity search component (a developmental and cognitive component) was higher compared to affirmation, belonging, and commitment component (an affective component). No significant difference was found between male and female students in these two components otherwise there was significant difference on the ethnic identity search component between college and high school students. In contrast, the score of ethnic identity search component of the majority group was lower compared to the score of affirmation, belonging, and commitment component. Significant differences were found between genders for the affirmation, belonging, and commitment component as well as between high school and college students for the ethnic identity search component. Overall, the scores of youth from ethnic minority and majority groups were high and similar, and there was only one significant difference found in the ethnic identity search component between these two groups.

The Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) population is often considered hard-tocount in the United States. Following the guidelines set by the Office of Management and Budget, the U.S. Census Bureau classifies the MENA population as White but collects their ancestry data in the American Community Survey. This paper explores how the 2010 Alternative Questionnaire Experiment (AQE) contributes to improving the quality of the data that the Census Bureau collects on MENA ancestries. It discusses results from the AQE conducted during the 2010 Census and evaluates the forms that use the combined race and ethnic origin question in comparison to the control form. This research aims to contribute to improving measurement of the MENA community in the United States.

This course provides an introduction to important themes in Western modern political theory. Much of this genre of knowledge is organized around the question of difference. Theorists have asked: Are we different from each other? If so, how? And how do we manage this difference? These suppositions, questions, arguments emerge and are shaped by major historical events including colonialism and the industrial revolution, the history of capitalism and slavery in the Americas, anti-colonial revolutions and post-colonial nationalism, and war and migration. In this class, students will engage in close readings of key political texts and begin to trace the way that the question of difference (religious, racial, gendered, sexual, class) is formulated and managed. We ask, " What sorts of political imaginaries, possibilities, and projects are opened up and/or foreclosed within these bodies of knowledge? " A note on methodology: Students will be asked to engage in close readings of texts, including literature, art, manifesto, and more orthodox " political theory texts. " We will pay close attention to the ways in which the genres of speech/writing shape the possibilities of political critique.

The first part of this paper presents a historical outline of how racial and cultural alterity (particularly indigeneity) has been imagined and represented by elites in Colombia since the nineteenth century. The evolution of these ideas takes us to the contemporary category of “ethnic groups” and its representation in positive terms, a process that signifies a substantial change compared to past discourses in favour of cultural homogeneity. The second part of this text reflects on the ways in which ethnic policies are legitimized  –today more than ever– through the principle of “the protection of cultural diversity”, a principle which is widely praised and uncontested, but which has become totally dependent on problematic concepts such as “cultural damage”, “authenticity” or “preservation”. Furthermore, the institutional actions based on that principle are actually uncertain, ambiguous and inefficient, a situation that invites us to question the “policies for diversity”.

In March 2012, Bravo released a new reality television show called Shahs of Sunset, which received much criticism for producing content that mimics various other reality television programs already broadcast globally. This article analyses the characters and themes evaded by the first season of Shahs of Sunset in an attempt to understand the show's popularity in spite of the negative criticism. As such, this article analyses Shahs of Sunset through the historical scopes of the discourse of Orientalism as discussed by Edward Said in the late 1970s. In this dichotomy, the heavy presence of Persian imagery within the show repeats common orientalist stereotypes about Arab 'others'. As a result, the attempt to authenticate Shahs of Sunset failed in terms of creating understanding for the complexities of Orientalism;

This paper looks at the Federação de Entidades Árabes das Americas (Federation of Arab Associations of the Americas,” called FEARAB in Portuguese and Spanish), a social movement of mostly Argentines, Brazilians, Chileans, and Paraguayans of Arab origin. In 1973, South Americans of Arab origin founded FEARAB. Under varied forms of military authoritarian rule, they aimed to strengthen the bonds between the Arab world and the Americas as well as to build a “pan-American” alliance that included the “Association of Arab-American University Graduates” (AAUG) in the U.S..  I ask how FEARAB activists fostered ties with: Arab state powers;  South American authoritarian regimes;  and Arab civil rights groups in the U.S.. They reveal that Arabs, too, embody and extend the hemisphere.

Crossing distinct literatures, histories, and politics, Giving Form to an Asian and Latinx America reveals the intertwined story of contemporary Asian Americans and Latinxs through a shared literary aesthetic. Their transfictional literature creates expansive imagined worlds in which distinct stories coexist, offering artistic shape to their linked political and economic struggles. Long Le-Khac explores the work of writers such as Sandra Cisneros, Karen Tei Yamashita, Junot Díaz, and Aimee Phan. He shows how their fictions capture the uneven economic opportunities of the post–civil rights era, the Cold War as it exploded across Asia and Latin America, and the Asian and Latin American labor flows powering global capitalism today.

Read together, Asian American and Latinx literatures convey astonishing diversity and untapped possibilities for coalition within the United States' fastest-growing immigrant and minority communities; to understand the changing shape of these communities we must see how they have formed in relation to each other. As the U.S. population approaches a minority-majority threshold, we urgently need methods that can look across the divisions and unequal positions of the racial system. Giving Form to an Asian and Latinx America leads the way with a vision for the future built on panethnic and cross-racial solidarity.

Social relations between the Khasi and the non-tribal settlers in Meghalaya are filled with little nostalgia and much violence. A freak incident in June 2018 between two individuals due to an already congested traffic situation in the streets of Shillong, which should have wrapped up within the police station soon takes a communal overtone and escalates into a huge law and order failure, resulting in several days of curfews, flag marches and a total clamping down of mobile and internet services over the entire state for over fifteen days. The way this incident gained momentum within a short span of few hours and took a violent turn instantly takes us back to the series of clashes Shillong witnessed in 1979, 1987, and early 1990's. At the core of all these violent clashes including the most recent one what remains consistent is an identity, a feeling of oneness, belongingness and togetherness, self-esteem and pride often demarcated on the ethnic lines. An identity that deeply roots itself into the "sameness" of language, culture, religion and stems out of differentiation of us and them is marred in conflict. Ethnic identity is a socio-political construct that has been a driving force of resistance and power since the formation of Meghalaya as a state in 1972. IN THE scholarly analysis of contemporary politics, public opinion is king. As liberal democracies have seen multi-party competition devolve into divisive, one dimensional verdicts on strong man politics and single issue referenda, so has public opinion scholarship never been more prominent or discussed. Brexit in the UK has been a boomtime for this kind of work. University of Manchester professors Maria Sobolewska and Robert Ford sit at the sober and most scholarly end of a highly visible and influential field of work, that runs from the technical boffinry of John Curtice on election night, via scholars such as Geoff Evans and Will Jennings echoing the "blue left" by charting the loss of the Labour heartlands, to the anti-liberal op. ed. provocations of Matthew Goodwin, Eric Kaufmann and David Goodhart. All of them seem to share a thirst for the media limelight: sometimes awkwardly combining "data science" with work close to the logic of media commentary and party strategising. Brexitland may stand as the capstone of a literature first launched by Ford's earlier volume with Goodwin, Revolt on the Right (2014): on the rise of UKIP, Nigel Farage, and the ripping apart and realignment of two party dominated British politics. Brexit, it argues, was the end point of a seismic shift in British politics that can be drawn right back through the post-war period.  Key to this view has been the emergence of what they see as a deeply rooted "cultural war" patterned essentially on the one raging on the other side of the Atlantic, with one crucial dimension — the variable salience over the decades of "immigration" as the wild card in British politics.

The aim of this research is to analyse the recent waves of return migration by Chinese-Koreans and ethnic Koreans from the former Soviet Union to South Korea against the backdrop of other contemporary reverse migrations from the erstwhile world of ‘really existing socialism’, namely the movement of Soviet Germans and Jews to Germany and Israel respectively. Identifying the special traits of the return migrations from the West and North to South Korea, this research will focus on the problematic sides of Chinese-Koreans’ and former Soviet Koreans’ encounter with South Korean realities, in hope of providing
materials and discussion needed to improve the situation with return migrants’ integration into South Korean society. The methodology of this research is historical and comparativist. It concludes that, unlike the former Soviet Germans in Germany or Jews in Israel, conceptualized as ‘returnees’, Chinese-Koreans and former Soviet Koreans in South Korea are defined as essentially ‘exploitable cheap labour’. They are seen as (transitory) ‘residents’ rather than (permanent) members of the host society. Lack of permanent legal status and thorough discrimination by the native South Korean majority are conducive to the emergence of reactive ethnicity among the return migrants who coalesce
around the connections to the country of departure and the sense of perceived victimization. The research suggests that, to improve the social integration of the return migrants, a basic reconsideration of the discriminatory legal and discursive frameworks around them is needed.

Held annually, the Teaching Black History Conference aims to improve Black history curriculum decision-making and instructional practice. Individual sessions are led by classroom teachers as well as university professors. This year’s theme is Teaching Black History across the Disciplines: A Black Studies Approach. We are focusing on how teachers can bring aspects of Black history and continue to teach math, science, art, English, etc. This year, our guest panel features Karyn Parsons, founder of Sweetblackberry (http://www.sweetblackberry.org/). You may know Karyn as Hillary from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire, a popular sitcom during the 1990s. Sweetblackberry develops Black history cartoons for school children.

Identity is a necessary way of auto-definition in the process of building any human group. Some societies (not many) with strong political forces need to develop their identity process and to build the most powerful ethnic feelings. The building of ethnicity is not a simply task, as can be seen in the case of Mount Lykaion, in Arcadia. This is a clear example of the ideological force which characterizes the identity definitions and the ethnic building process.
