Joseph J. Jund was born the second of nine children to John and Rose (Salwei) Jund in Zeeland, ND, on August 14, 1944. During high school, Joe moved to Mobridge, where he enjoyed participating in sports. He especially loved football and baseball, and he made many lifetime friends there. Joe graduated from Mobridge High School in 1962.

Following high school, Joe moved to Aberdeen to attend Northern State College and played football. He was united in marriage to Eleanor Schell in 1964, and they made their home together in Aberdeen. Joe started his job with the state of South Dakota, which lasted for 50 years! His dedication to one company showed the very definition of loyalty. He finished his career in the Department of Transportation, making many lifelong friends, especially Gary O'Reilly.

He could often be found in the yard or garden, tending to flowers and produce or working on the grass. Many of Jackie’s purple ribbons in 4-H came from plants lovingly grown by Joe. Known as the “state man,” he was easily recognizable in his bright orange shirt, then bright yellow. He spent countless hours in ditches setting up traffic counters. He enjoyed fishing, hunting pheasants and deer, especially with family.

Joe loved all his kids’ activities, especially sports. Many weekends were spent driving to hockey tournaments to watch Jason play goalie or to football games. He also cherished his time with Eleanor’s daycare kids, entertaining them, while waiting for their parents to pick them up.

Joe became a Boy Scout den leader for Jason’s class and loved every moment of it. He enjoyed coming up with fun and creative projects for the boys to work on, inspiring them to learn and work together. Joe was a dedicated member of Sacred Heart for 60 years. He ensured his kids attended Roncalli and was pleased that Jackie went to Presentation College. He was actively involved in the Roncalli Booster Club and, at Sacred Heart, drove the pickup van and served on the cemetery committee for many years. He was a 50 year member of the Royal order of the Moose club, as well as longtime member of the Royal order of the Aberdeen Elks club. Joe’s greatest joy came when his four grandkids joined the family. He loved traveling to North Sioux City to attend all their activities and spend time with them.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Jackie Jund of Aberdeen, SD; son, Jason (Tiffany) Jund, and their four children: Jayce, Jamisyn, Jaidyn, and Jayla, all of North Sioux City, SD; and four siblings: Mike (Sharon) Jund, Mary (Jim) Holzer, Caroline (Mike) Jackson and Sally (Daryl) Isburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Eleanor; two daughters Kristin and Mary; and four siblings.
