Zhou Nan (Simplified Chinese: 周南; Pinyin: Zhōu Nán) was a prominent Chinese politician and diplomat, and served as Director of the Xinhua News Agency in Hong Kong, Vice Minister of the People's Republic of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ambassador to the United Nations. He was also a member of the Standing Committee of the 7th and 8th National People's Congress, and a member of the 14th Central Committee of the CPC. He is best known as China's delegation head and main representative during negotiations for the transfer of sovereignties of Hong Kong and Macau from Britain and Portugal to China.
Early years and education
Born in December 1927 in Changchun, Jilin Province, Zhou was born under the name of Gao Qinglian. He was the youngest of the five children born to Gao Guozhu, the magistrate of Anda County in Heilongjiang Province, and his second wife Wang Yunzhi. Just before the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, the family moved to the city of Tianjin, where at age 14, Gao enrolled at Tianjin's Yaohua High School. Upon graduation, he attended Beijing University from 1944–1948, majoring in philosophy. In 1949, he was appointed Head of the English Department at Beijing Foreign Studies University.
King Nan of Zhou (Chinese:周赧王; pinyin:Zhōu Nǎn Wáng) (?–256 BC), or less commonly King Yin "the Beclouded" of Zhou, personal name Jī Yan, was the thirty-sixth and last king of the ChineseZhou dynasty, the son of the King Shenjing of Zhou and grandson of King Xian of Zhou. He was king for fifty-nine years, longest in Zhou Dynasty and all the pre-imperial China (in terms of the reign length followed by King Mu of Zhou). By the time of King Nan's reign, the kings of Zhou had lost almost all political and military power, as even their remaining crown land was split into two states or factions, led by rival feudal lords: West Zhou, where the capital Wangcheng was located, and East Zhou, centered at Chengzhou and Kung. Therefore, Nan lacked any personal territory and was de facto subjected to the local feudal lords, essentially relying on their charity.
However, Nan's symbolic and ritual power remains disputed. One one side, the Chinese states largely ignored the king's activities and adopted royal titles and rituals for themselves, while the dynasty's fall generally received meager contemporary coverage and attention. This led to the assumption that Nan did no longer had any symbolic power or semblance of royal authority left. On the other side, recent epigraphic discoveries and some accounts in the Records of the Grand Historian and Zhan Guo Ce suggest that even until his death, Nan was still respected as Son of Heaven. Either way, the last king of Zhou managed to preserve his weakened dynasty through diplomacy and conspiracies for fifty-nine years until his deposition and death by Qin in 256 BC.
