The Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau or Yungui Plateau (simplified Chinese:云贵高原; traditional Chinese:雲貴高原; pinyin:Yúnguì Gāoyuán) is a plateau located in the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou in southwest China. There are two distinct areas of this plateau: an area of high plateau averaging about 2,000 metres (6,600ft) with mountain peaks as high as 3,700m (12,100ft) in northern Yunnan, and an area of rolling hills, deep river-carved gorges, and mountains marked with geologic faults in western Guizhou. Easily eroded limestone underlies the plateau, allowing for spectacular karsts.
Temperature
Due to its high elevation and low latitude, the climate of the plateau is subject to intense solar radiation and cool temperatures with a large daily fluctuation and little yearly variation. The climate is divided into dry and wet seasons. Overall, the description of the climate is complicated on the Plateau as the temperature varies from place to place. The height of the Plateau accounts for approximately one-third of the troposphere on earth due to its high elevation, since as height rises, troposphere drops. For every 100m (330ft) rise, in general there is a 0.6°C (1.1°F) fall in temperature. In north Tibet the atmospheric temperatures are in closed temperature isolines showing the distinct impact of high elevation on temperature.
Yunnan is a province of the People's Republic of China, located in the far southwest of the country. It spans approximately 394,000 square kilometres (152,000sqmi) and has a population of 45.7 million (2009). The capital of the province is Kunming, formerly also known as Yunnan. The province borders Vietnam, Laos and Burma.
Yunnan is situated in a mountainous area, with high elevations in the northwest and low elevations in the southeast. Most of the population lives in the eastern part of the province. In the west, the altitude can vary from the mountain peaks to river valleys as much as 3,000 metres (9,800ft). Yunnan is rich in natural resources and has the largest diversity of plant life in China. Of the approximately 30,000 species of higher plants in China, Yunnan has perhaps 17,000 or more. Yunnan's reserves of aluminium, lead, zinc and tin are the largest in China, and there are also major reserves of copper and nickel.
The Han Empire first recorded diplomatic relations with the province at the end of the 2nd century BCE. It became the seat of a Tibeto-Burman-speaking kingdom of Nanzhao in the 8th century CE. Nanzhao was multi-ethnic, but the elite most likely spoke a northern dialect of Yi. The Mongols conquered the region in the 13th century, with local control exercised by warlords until the 1930s. As with other parts of China's southwest, Japanese occupation in the north during World War II forced a migration of majority Han people into the region. Ethnic minorities in Yunnan account for about 34 percent of its total population. Major ethnic groups include Yi, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, Dai and Miao.
The area was first organized as an imperially-controlled Chinese administrative region during the Tang dynasty, and was named "Juzhou" (矩州, Middle Chinese: Kjú-jyuw). During the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty, the element "Ju" ("carpenter's square") was changed to the more refined "Gui" ("precious"). The region formally became a province in 1413, with its capital at old Guizhou (modern Guiyang).
History
From around 1046 BCE to the emergence of the Qin Dynasty, northwest Guizhou was part of the State of Shu. During the Warring States period, the Chinese state of Chu conquered the area, and control later passed to the Dian Kingdom. During the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE), to which the Dian was tributary, Guizhou was home to the Yelang collection of tribes, which largely governed themselves before the Han consolidated control in the southwest and established the Lingnan province. During the Three Kingdoms period, parts of Guizhou were governed by the Shu Han state based in Sichuan, followed by Cao Wei (220–265) and the Jin Dynasty (265–420).

Central Guizhou Series | Episode 6: Fertile hinterland
Nestled in China's southwestern hinterland, this is a transitional zone between highlands and plains. Streams originating in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau carry surging life force across the vast land in their eastward currents. On the dominant karst cliffs and in the dense woodlands, the François' langurs living in Guizhou Province never fail to leave traces in every corner of this vast land of wonders. At an elevation of 2,200 meters, the karst highland is endowed with ample sunshine and temperate weather that help maintain rich bio resources. The broad and clear water is home to a treasure trove of fauna and flora. The grasses and fish, in turn, draw numerous migratory birds to settle there.

Located 202 km northeast of Lijiang on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, Lugu Lake holds the Guozhuang dance, an important social activity for the Mosuo for selecting a sexual partner.
Walking marriage (Chinese: 走婚) is a widely-used misnomer for the sort of romantic and sexual relationships embedded in the culture of, for example, the Jaintia sub-tribe of the Khasi people of Meghalaya in north-east India and the Mosuo ethnic minority of China. The Mosuo call it tisese, which translates literally as "walking back and forth". The traditional culture in both these groups is strongly matrilineal and matrilocal.
