György Lukács

György Lukács (/ˈlkɑː/; Hungarian: [ˌɟørɟ ˈlukaːtʃ]; 13 April 1885 – 4 June 1971) was a Hungarian Marxist philosopher, aesthetician, literary historian, and critic. He was one of the founders of Western Marxism, an interpretive tradition that departed from the Marxist ideological orthodoxy of the USSR. He developed the theory of reification, and contributed to Marxist theory with developments of Karl Marx's theory of class consciousness. He was also the philosopher of Leninism. He ideologically developed and organised Lenin’s pragmatic revolutionary practices into the formal philosophy of vanguard-party revolution (Leninism).

As a literary critic Lukács was especially influential, because of his theoretical developments of realism and of the novel as a literary genre. In 1919, he was the Hungarian Minister of Culture of the government of the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic (March–August 1919).

Lukács has been described as the preeminent Marxist intellectual of the Stalinist era, though assessing his legacy can be difficult as Lukács seemed to both support Stalinism as the embodiment of Marxist thought, and yet also champion a return to pre-Stalinist Marxism.

In the Hungarian soviet republic (1919) he functioned as people's commissar for public education and then as a red army political commissar. After the Romanians defeated the soviet republic, he fled to Vienna, but came back to Hungary for a secret mission to organise the banned communist party in 1929. Between 1920 and 1944, the country was ruled by the conservative Horthy dictatorship and fought as an ally of Germany in the Second World War. After 1945, Hungary became socialist again, but this time due to Soviet occupation. Lukács took part in the 1956 revolutionary government fighting for non-stalinist socialism. After the USSR crushed the revolution, Lukács was arrested and deported to Romania. Then he was allowed to come back and the communist party rehabilitated him in 1967 after a period of being stigmatised. Lukacs led to the Culture War

Georg Lukacs and Ernst Bloch debated the relative merits of Expressionism as against Socialist Realism in 1938 as Hitler was taking Czechoslovakia and Austria. Today we debate Dave Chappelle comedy specials and comic book movies as capitalism sets up multiple crises including right-wing populist movements, climate change disasters, and perpetual proxy wars. Should we move beyond cultural concerns or are we in desperate need of a new class consciousness? Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization. Zer0 Books wants to work against this trend.
