Kim Yeon-seung takes a look back at how he lived.
Former South Korean president Roh Tae-woo was born in 1932 in a small mountainside village in Daegu.
He didn't stand out much as a child, nor did he excel academically.
But when he first joined the military in 1950 as the Korean War broke out, he took his first step toward what later led to his presidency.
In 1951 he joined the Korea Military Academy, a prestigious institution that fosters elite military personnel.
There,... he befriended Chun Doo-hwan, who would later become the infamous South Korean dictator who overthrew the government in a coup in 1979 and ordered a military crackdown on protesters, killing several hundreds.
All the while, Roh Tae-woo stood by Chun's side as his closest aide.
Roh was due to be named as Chun's successor,.. but then the "June Struggle" broke out,... with nationwide uproar calling for democratic reforms.
Roh Tae woo had no choice but to push for democratic change.
In 1987, he and his party members drafted a new constitution... which included the provision to change the presidential election into a direct election by popular vote.
During the election campaign, odds seemed to be stacked against Roh, with many voicing their distaste for his ties to the Chun administration.
But Roh campaigned himself as an "average joe" and he went on to win, albeit by a slim margin with 36 percent of the votes.
From 1988 to 1993, Roh strived to achieve peace with North Korea and carved out friendly diplomatic relationships with many countries as South Korea's 13th president.
But in 1995, two years after his term had ended... there were allegations of him illegally obtaining public funds.
He was subsequently arrested and tried on charges of corruption, along with mutiny and treason, for his past involvement with dictator Chun Doo-wan.
The Supreme Court sentenced him to 17 years in prison, but in 1997 he was pardoned by president Kim Young-sam upon the request of president-elect Kim Dae-jung.
With his life having come to an end at age 88, Roh Tae woo remains one of the most controversial yet influential figures in South Korean political history.
He laid the groundwork for the democratic nation that South Korea is today, but also orchestrated military crackdowns.

President Moon Jae-in relayed condolences to family and friends of Roh Tae-woo, the country’s first directly elected leader, who passed way on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the nation has decided to hold a state funeral for the late former president.
Kim Do-yeon tells us more.
South Korean President, Moon Jae-in sent his top aides to pay their respects on his behalf to late former President Roh Tae-woo and show their condolences to the bereaved family.
"As the President included in his message this morning, as former President Roh made more than a few bad decisions but also had some notable achievements, the citizens will have differing opinions. We took that into account and decided on a state funeral during a cabinet meeting."
Noh Tae-woo will not be laid to rest at the National Cemetery like other former presidents due to his criminal records.
While he was pardoned by his successor... the law still prohibits him from being buried there... as he was sentenced with treason.
As of now, the family and the ministry are working to see if he can be buried at the Unification Park in the City of Paju... as it was his wish written in his will.
His will also begged for forgiveness.
"He asked for forgiveness, particularly regarding the victims of the crackdown on the May 18th Gwangju Pro-democracy Movement, and other things he took responsibility for that happened before he was president. Also he said he will take all the bad things that happened with him. He also said he wished for the generations to live with hope."
The son continued that it's unfortunate that his father couldn't offer the apologies himself.
But he was severely ill and hadn't been able to communicate for the past ten years.
In the meantime, the funeral home started accepting visitors at 10 AM today.
The family arrived first to get ready to greet the visitors.
One of the first ones to arrive was SK Chairman Chey Tae-won... who also is Roh's son-in-law.
Here's what he had to say.
"I'm very saddened as well. He suffered for a while, but I hope he rests in peace."
In addition, Samsung Electronics' Vice Chairman, Lee Jae-yong also stopped by later in the day.
As for politicians... there were visitors from all across the political spectrum.
Mostly, they said that this is a place of remembrance rather than criticism and that showing respect to the deceased is the right thing to do.
"This state funeral is being held in the five-day traditional format... with the late president's body to be taken to be buried on the 30th.
This also means flags in public places are to be flown at half-mast.
Kim Do-yeon, Arirang News."

APTV Looks back on the events which culminated with Chun being sentenced to death and Roh facing years in jail.
Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo were childhood friends who followed each other into the military and now they will be following each other to prison.
Chun was sentenced to death by a panel of three judges after being found guilty of overthrowing the government in 1979.
But observers believe the sentence is unlikely to be carried out - it will automatically be referred to the court of appeal anyway.
Chun made himself president in 1980 and was succeeded by Roh Tae-woo eight years later.
Roh helped Chun to seize power and then to put down pro-democracy protestors in the southern city of Kwangju.
The government admitted that 240 people were killed and a further 18 hundred wounded.
Human rights groups say the death toll was much higher.
SOUNDBITE: (Korean)
"The same year, from May 18 to May 27, when the people of Kwangju protested for an end to the military junta and the removal of Chun Doo-hwan Chun and Roh called in the special forces and gave orders to kill and suppress the uprising."
SUPER CAPTION: Lee Jong Chan, Head of Investigation, Seoul District Prosecutor's Office
One woman who lived through the bloody events of 1980 - speaking at a rally earlier this month - said the two men's actions demanded strong punishment.
SOUNDBITE: (Korean)
"Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo both deserve the death penalty to vindicate those who died on 18th May."
SUPER CAPTION: Lee Kyee-reem, Kwangju resident
The pair are widely hated by a generation of young radicals - who have brought the streets of Seoul to a standstill with protests against the leaders of the former regime.
Thirteen other ex-generals were sentenced to prison terms between four and ten years for their role in the military regime.

A farewell ceremony for South Korea's late President Roh Tae-woo was held today in Seoul... marking the end of a five-day state funeral.
Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum delivered a eulogy at the ceremony.
The number of people attending his funeral was reduced to a minimum... following his last wishes and the pandemic situation.
After cremation, his ashes will be temporarily placed in the border town of Paju... and his family is reportedly considering moving his cremains to Unification Hill later.
Traffic will be under control in some parts of Seoul and roads leading to Paju today.

(24 Nov 1995) Natural Sound
Former South Korean President Roh Tae Woo has been paid a visit in jail by his son Roh Jai Hyun who has reported his father to be in good health.
In a scandal that has rocked South Korea the former president is being held in detention on charges of accepting huge bribes from businessmen in return for awarding lucrative projects during his presidency.
Roh, a former army general, was jailed last week on bribery charges, becoming the first South Korean president to face legal action for misdeeds in office.
If convicted, he could face 10 years to life in prison.
A visit to the jail by his son Roh Jai Hyun on Thursday attracted huge media interest.
Roh Jai Hyun refused to say anything to reporters except that his father was in good health and that they did not discuss the corruption allegations against him.
The visit has come as South Korean president Kim Young Sam has ruled he will pass a law allowing punishment for the controversial Kwangju attack in 1980 in which Roh was involved.
Roh then an army general headed the junta that ordered crack troops to stop an uprising ...200 people were killed.
