This video is a metaphor of the genesis of my debut album “Presence”: a long journey, from unreal situations to the next. It’s only now that I realize of all the path I’ve taken these last months, the disproportionate achievement we’ve forged with hard work, with the kind of stubbornness that enables us to realize our dreams.
The colossus that you see on my album cover and in the “Beam” video is my music, or rather the debut album. Today is November the 3rd, I’m almost 18 and I’m proud to introduce you to it.

I Broke These Concrete Beams - Design Principles from Beam Failures
I constructed six reinforced concrete beams in the lab and then loaded them to failure. What can we learn about reinforced concrete behavior and good design principles from these tests?
Two of the beams exhibited flexural failures with lots of flexural cracking and ultimate crushing of the concrete in compression. Two beams had traditional shear failures, with a diagonal crack extending through the section. Finally, two beams had anchorage failures, where the ends of the bars pulled out at the support. Good beam design encourages flexural failures because of its ductility and predictability.

This video is an introduction to shear force and bending moment diagrams.
What are Shear Forces and Bending Moments?
Shear forces and bending moments are resultants which are used to conveniently represent the internal forces that develop within a beam when external loads are acting on it.
The internal forces that exist within the beam will depend on how the beam is loaded, and how it is supported. Beams are typically loaded by concentrated forces, distributed forces, and concentrated moments. Typical beam supports include pinned supports, roller supports, and fully fixed supports.
How Do We Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams?
Determining shear forces and bending moments along the length of a beam typically involves three steps:
- First we draw the free body diagram of our beam.
- Next we use the equilibrium equations to calculate the reaction forces and moments.
- Finally, we cut our beam at a single location and use the equilibrium equations to determine the shear force and bending moment at that location. We repeat this process for each location along the beam, and draw the result on our shear force and bending moment diagrams.

🔶 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 🔶
Reinforcement in staircases is primarily composed of main bars, distribution bars, and other reinforcement details:
📌 Main Bars: Placed longitudinally, these bars bear the majority of the load and provide structural strength to the stairs.
📌 Distribution Bars: Positioned perpendicular to the main bars, they help distribute the load evenly across the staircase.
📌 Cranked Bars: Designed to provide additional support at points of high stress, cranked bars prevent sagging and cracking.
📌 Extra Top Bars: Placed at the top of the staircase for added reinforcement, especially in high-tension areas.
🔷 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 🔷
📌 Bottom Reinforcement: This reinforcement is crucial to handle tensile forces at the bottom of the staircase.
📌 Side Reinforcement: Provides additional support to prevent side cracks or damage under lateral pressure.
📌 Landing Slab Reinforcement: Landing areas require specific reinforcement to handle concentrated loads and prevent deflection.
