American middle class
The American middle class is a social class in the United States. While the concept is typically ambiguous in popular opinion and common language use, contemporary social scientists have put forward several more or less congruent theories on the American middle class. Depending on the class model used, the middle class constitutes anywhere from 25% to 66% of households.
One of the first major studies of the middle class in America was White Collar: The American Middle Classes, published in 1951 by sociologist C. Wright Mills. Later sociologists such as Dennis Gilbert of Hamilton College commonly divide the middle class into two sub-groups. Constituting roughly 15% to 20% of households is the upper or professional middle class consisting of highly educated, salaried professionals and managers. Constituting roughly one third of households is the lower middle class consisting mostly of semi-professionals, skilled craftsmen and lower-level management. Middle-class persons commonly have a comfortable standard of living, significant economic security, considerable work autonomy and rely on their expertise to sustain themselves.

Americans
Americans are citizens of the United States of America. The country is home to people of many different national origins. As a result, most Americans do not equate their nationality with ethnicity, but with citizenship and allegiance. Although citizens make up the majority of Americans, non-citizen residents, dual citizens, and expatriates may also claim an American identity.
Overview
The majority of Americans or their ancestors immigrated within the past five centuries, with the exception of the Native American population and people from Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine Islands who became American through expansion of the country in the 19th century, and American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Northern Mariana Islands in the 20th century.
Despite its multi-ethnic composition, the culture of the United States held in common by most Americans can also be referred to as mainstream American culture, a Western culture largely derived from the traditions of Northern and Western European colonists, settlers, and immigrants. It also includes influences of African-American culture. Westward expansion integrated the Creoles and Cajuns of Louisiana and the Hispanos of the Southwest and brought close contact with the culture of Mexico. Large-scale immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from Southern and Eastern Europe introduced a variety of elements. Immigration from Asia, Africa, and Latin America has also had impact. A cultural melting pot, or pluralistic salad bowl, describes the way in which generations of Americans have celebrated and exchanged distinctive cultural characteristics.

Working class
The working class (also labouring class and proletariat) are the people employed for wages, especially in manual-labour occupations and in skilled, industrial work. Working-class occupations include blue-collar jobs, some white-collar jobs, and most service-work jobs. The working class only rely upon their earnings from wage labour, thereby, the category includes most of the working population of industrialized economies, of the urban areas (cities, towns, villages) of non-industrialized economies, and of the rural workforce.
In Marxist theory and in socialist literature, the term working class usually is synonymous and interchangeable with the term proletariat, and includes all workers who expend either physical labour or mental labour (salaried knowledge workers and white-collar workers) to produce economic value for the owners of the means of production, the bourgeoisie. Since working-class wages can be very low, and because the state of unemployment is defined as a lack of independent means of generating an income and a lack wage-labour employment, the term working class also includes the lumpenproletariat, unemployed people who are extremely poor.

Working Class (TV series)
Working Class is an American television sitcom created by Jill Cargerman, which premiered on CMT on January 28, 2011. The network ordered twelve episodes for the comedy, which is the first scripted series for the network.
On April 11, 2011, CMT cancelled Working Class after only one season due to low ratings.
Premise
The series follows Carli Mitchell (Melissa Peterman), a single mom from a rough and tumble background, trying to give her three kids a better life by moving them to an upscale suburb. She quickly finds that making the transition to “the good life” is harder than she thought. Patrick Fabian plays a grocery shop worker.

The middle class was once a symbol of the American dream. It meant financial security and an opportunity for a better future. But that portrait of the American middle class is quite different today. A survey in 2018 found that a third of middle-income adults don’t have as much as $400 to cover an unexpected expense. And while the middle-class lifestyle grows more expensive and uncertain, it’s also moving beyond the reach of younger generations.
“It was at least a secure category,” said Alissa Quart, author of ‘Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America,’ [but] there are certain kinds of assumptions around being a middle-class person” that have “shattered” over the past 10 to 15 years.
Some middle-income households and experts believe a lack of supporting policies might be to blame for the drastic changes.
“There is no help whatsoever,” according to Chantal Jacob, a middle-income parent from suburban Texas. “There’s no policy in place to assist people. And I feel like as soon as you get a job, as soon as you’re working, they’re just like, ‘That’s all you need, a job. You got it, go forth and have at it.’ ”
Lawrence Mishel, a distinguished fellow at the Economic Policy Institute, shares that sentiment. “It’s not that the economy got worse, it was that there were policy decisions made so that the economic growth did not filter down to the vast majority.”
The Biden administration has been pushing for several bills aimed at supporting middle-income households, including the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure legislation passed in November 2021 and the Build Back Better Act currently stalled in Congress. But observers say it might not be enough to save the middle class from economic hardship now and in the future.
“My friends that were struggling are still struggling,” said Jacob. “I’m still budgeting down to every dollar trying to get things done. So I just feel like if the changes are happening, they’re not trickling down fast enough for us to see the effects of it.”

Over the past decade, the American middle class has witnessed a significant decline. In the last ten years alone, individuals with middle incomes have experienced a more substantial loss in purchasing power than they did between 1970 and 1990. This trend is primarily attributed to the escalating cost of living in the United States, which has propelled median home prices from $117,000 in the '70s to nearly $450,000 today. Various aspects of daily life, such as cars, healthcare, education, gas, utilities, and other consumables, have seen a marked and exponential increase in prices. However, incomes have only seen a 66% rise over the last five decades. Inflation further compounds the issue, eroding a larger portion of people's income each month.
The traditional American dream of attaining financial security and building wealth through home equity is increasingly unattainable for a significant portion of the population, even those classified as middle class. The current labor market lacks an adequate number of middle-income jobs to sustain the contemporary middle class, leading many households to rely on multiple jobs to maintain their living standards. A substantial number of individuals may have already fallen out of the middle class without realizing it. The current job market is highly polarized, where individuals must either pursue an expensive college degree for top-tier positions or settle for lower-paying jobs. Having a degree does not guarantee a six-figure salary, given the prevalence of more available roles at the lower end of the job market.
An August 2023 survey by American Compus revealed that a majority of American workers lack job security, with only 40% having secure jobs that pay at least $40,000 annually, inclusive of health insurance and paid time off, while also offering predictable earnings and a regular schedule. Despite the historical role of the middle class as an engine of economic growth in the U.S., it currently contributes a smaller share of income than it did from 1960 to 1980, according to Pew Research Center data. The middle class has contracted by 11% since the presidency of Richard Nixon in 2023, accounting for less than half of the country's population.
There is a prevailing belief among economists that the official figures may underestimate the true size of the middle class due to ambiguity in its definition. The Department of Labor places the federal poverty level for a family of four at $30,000, while those earning between $30,000 and $43,372 are considered middle class. However, critics argue that categorizing a part-time bartender and a suburban power couple with significantly disparate incomes in the same bracket is peculiar. The Federal Reserve defines the middle income level as individuals falling within the middle 50% of all income, but concerns arise about how this average is calculated, considering extreme income disparities. A more accurate median income could be up to 10 times higher than the current figures suggest.
In essence, the middle class is not precisely positioned in the middle today, and the current definition reflects more on demographics than actual purchasing power. While middle-class families may not be miserable, their financial security is not guaranteed, and the foundational support for this group appears to be deteriorating. A growing number of middle-class Americans are being excluded from homeownership, with approximately 11 million families that were once part of this income bracket no longer included since 2020. This situation has been exacerbated by inflation, reaching a peak of 9.1% in June.
In 2022, property values have experienced a substantial surge, leading to a boon in home equity for some. However, this has resulted in most young adults being entirely priced out of the housing market. With the highest mortgage rates in over two decades, middle-income households can now only afford homes that are worth half as much as they could just three years ago. Fannie Mae reports a significant decline in median purchasing power for families, plummeting to $189,900, compared to $356,550 when interest rates were near zero. While purchasing power has diminished, list prices have seen a sharp increase, with 45% of markets in 100 major U.S. cities, as tracked by Redfin economists, reporting list prices exceeding half a million dollars in 2023.

And this may be one of the only times in my life where I actually agree with MIT Romney, but here is what Mitt Romney said on CNN's State of the Union this past Sunday. Donald Trump won. He won overwhelmingly, you know what? Go ahead and stop right there because no, no, he didn't. He got a plurality of votes. He didn't even get a majority of the votes. He did not cross the 50% mark.
He won by one and a half percent of the popular votes. So don't you dare try to convince people he won. Overwhelmingly he won, absolutely, but it was not by a mandate. So make sure you get that right next time, Romney. But he continued, he said what he was going to do, and that's what he's doing. I mean, people are saying, oh, I don't like this appointment or this policy that he is talking about, but those are all the things he said he was going to do when he ran. So you can't complain about someone who does what he said he was going to do.
And again, on those things, Romney's, a hundred percent right? We have already seen multiple different polls, we have seen posts on social media. You know, Buzzfeed did a, a big collection of posts less than a week after the election of all these people expressing buyer's remorse. A a poll came out just a couple days ago, an AP NORC poll that showed that a majority of Americans have already lost all faith in Donald Trump's decision making abilities. Like 60% of the country has no faith in Donald Trump's ability to make decisions. And that was, you know, a month after a plurality of people went to the polls and said, yep, let's put him back in the White House. Donald Trump is not going to cruise through an easy four years. I mean, I know he does have the media in his pocket now they're gonna do whatever the hell he wants him to do. But even with the media bowing down to Donald Trump, that's not going to convince most people in this country that their lives are better when clearly they will not be under these Trump policies. I mean, hell, if the media telling you that the economy was doing just fine during the Biden years, still led to them not voting for a Democrat, then the media telling you that Trump is actually okay is not gonna convince these people
Either. So, you know, it is a two-way street there that I guess kind of works out in our favor. But Trump, to his credit, did not spring all of this on us until after the election. He had been telling us for months and months and months he was gonna do these tariffs, that even conservative economists were warning like, Hey, that's going to destroy the economy. We're going to go into a recession, possibly a depression. The voters didn't care either they chose to ignore that, or they willingly chose to just not educate themselves. I don't know which one it is. Uh, I think it's a combination of both to a degree. But in the end, Trump told you what he was gonna do. He told you it was gonna, he literally sent out a fundraising email that said, I am your retribution. And now you're all terrified.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) is directing “American Sniper” from a screenplay written by Jason Hall, based on the book by Chris Kyle, with Scott McEwan and Jim DeFelice. The autobiography was a runaway bestseller, spending 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 13 of those at number one.
The film is being produced by Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, Andrew Lazar, Bradley Cooper and Peter Morgan. Tim Moore, Jason Hall, Sheroum Kim and Bruce Berman are serving as executive producers.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Tom Stern (“Changeling”); Oscar-nominated production designer James J. Murakami (“Changeling”) and production designer Charisse Cardenas; Oscar-winning editor Joel Cox (“Unforgiven”) and editor Gary D. Roach; and costume designer Deborah Hopper.
Opening December 25, 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures presents In Association with Village Roadshow Pictures, A Mad Chance Production, A 22nd & Indiana Production, “American Sniper.” The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

The American middle class, once a symbol of the American Dream, has undergone significant transformations since the 1970s. The Federal Reserve revealed that 33% of middle-income adults cannot afford an unexpected expense of $400, highlighting the economic fragility of this group. The Pew Research Center found that the percentage of American adults belonging to the middle class decreased from 61% in 1971 to 50% in 2023. This trend reflects a change in the economic composition and perception of the middle class in the U.S., with the rise of the "squeezed middle class" facing difficulties in maintaining their standard of living.
Costs of housing, education, healthcare, and other essential services have increased, while incomes have not kept pace, putting pressure on middle-income families. The situation has become more complicated for millennials, with only 60% belonging to middle-income households in their 20s, compared to almost 70% of baby boomers at the same age. Households with a family income of just over $100,000 face financial difficulties due to taxes, insurance, student loans, and the high cost of living.
Debt has become a burden for many American families, with total household debt reaching a record $16.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023. Student loan debt, amounting to $1.6 billion, is a significant factor in middle-class precarity. Homeownership has become unattainable for many, with nearly 23% of homeowners considering buying a home a financial mistake.
The erosion of stability and security that defined the middle class has profound implications for American society. The promise of upward mobility, a central component of the American dream, seems increasingly distant for many families. The transformation of the American middle class reflects profound changes in the economic and social structure of the United States, and its future is a central issue for the fate of the American dream.

The middle class was once a symbol of the American dream. It meant financial security and an opportunity for a better future. But that portrait of the American middle class is quite different today. A survey in 2018 found that a third of middle-income adults don’t have as much as $400 to cover an unexpected expense. And while the middle-class lifestyle grows more expensive and uncertain, it’s also moving beyond the reach of younger generations.
“It was at least a secure category,” said Alissa Quart, author of ‘Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America,’ [but] there are certain kinds of assumptions around being a middle-class person” that have “shattered” over the past 10 to 15 years.
Some middle-income households and experts believe a lack of supporting policies might be to blame for the drastic changes.
“There is no help whatsoever,” according to Chantal Jacob, a middle-income parent from suburban Texas. “There’s no policy in place to assist people. And I feel like as soon as you get a job, as soon as you’re working, they’re just like, ‘That’s all you need, a job. You got it, go forth and have at it.’ ”
Lawrence Mishel, a distinguished fellow at the Economic Policy Institute, shares that sentiment. “It’s not that the economy got worse, it was that there were policy decisions made so that the economic growth did not filter down to the vast majority.”
The Biden administration has been pushing for several bills aimed at supporting middle-income households, including the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure legislation passed in November 2021 and the Build Back Better Act currently stalled in Congress. But observers say it might not be enough to save the middle class from economic hardship now and in the future.
“My friends that were struggling are still struggling,” said Jacob. “I’m still budgeting down to every dollar trying to get things done. So I just feel like if the changes are happening, they’re not trickling down fast enough for us to see the effects of it.”

Over the past decade, the American middle class has witnessed a significant decline. In the last ten years alone, individuals with middle incomes have experienced a more substantial loss in purchasing power than they did between 1970 and 1990. This trend is primarily attributed to the escalating cost of living in the United States, which has propelled median home prices from $117,000 in the '70s to nearly $450,000 today. Various aspects of daily life, such as cars, healthcare, education, gas, utilities, and other consumables, have seen a marked and exponential increase in prices. However, incomes have only seen a 66% rise over the last five decades. Inflation further compounds the issue, eroding a larger portion of people's income each month.
The traditional American dream of attaining financial security and building wealth through home equity is increasingly unattainable for a significant portion of the population, even those classified as middle class. The current labor market lacks an adequate number of middle-income jobs to sustain the contemporary middle class, leading many households to rely on multiple jobs to maintain their living standards. A substantial number of individuals may have already fallen out of the middle class without realizing it. The current job market is highly polarized, where individuals must either pursue an expensive college degree for top-tier positions or settle for lower-paying jobs. Having a degree does not guarantee a six-figure salary, given the prevalence of more available roles at the lower end of the job market.
An August 2023 survey by American Compus revealed that a majority of American workers lack job security, with only 40% having secure jobs that pay at least $40,000 annually, inclusive of health insurance and paid time off, while also offering predictable earnings and a regular schedule. Despite the historical role of the middle class as an engine of economic growth in the U.S., it currently contributes a smaller share of income than it did from 1960 to 1980, according to Pew Research Center data. The middle class has contracted by 11% since the presidency of Richard Nixon in 2023, accounting for less than half of the country's population.
There is a prevailing belief among economists that the official figures may underestimate the true size of the middle class due to ambiguity in its definition. The Department of Labor places the federal poverty level for a family of four at $30,000, while those earning between $30,000 and $43,372 are considered middle class. However, critics argue that categorizing a part-time bartender and a suburban power couple with significantly disparate incomes in the same bracket is peculiar. The Federal Reserve defines the middle income level as individuals falling within the middle 50% of all income, but concerns arise about how this average is calculated, considering extreme income disparities. A more accurate median income could be up to 10 times higher than the current figures suggest.
In essence, the middle class is not precisely positioned in the middle today, and the current definition reflects more on demographics than actual purchasing power. While middle-class families may not be miserable, their financial security is not guaranteed, and the foundational support for this group appears to be deteriorating. A growing number of middle-class Americans are being excluded from homeownership, with approximately 11 million families that were once part of this income bracket no longer included since 2020. This situation has been exacerbated by inflation, reaching a peak of 9.1% in June.
In 2022, property values have experienced a substantial surge, leading to a boon in home equity for some. However, this has resulted in most young adults being entirely priced out of the housing market. With the highest mortgage rates in over two decades, middle-income households can now only afford homes that are worth half as much as they could just three years ago. Fannie Mae reports a significant decline in median purchasing power for families, plummeting to $189,900, compared to $356,550 when interest rates were near zero. While purchasing power has diminished, list prices have seen a sharp increase, with 45% of markets in 100 major U.S. cities, as tracked by Redfin economists, reporting list prices exceeding half a million dollars in 2023.

When adjusted for inflation, wages have remained virtually unchanged over the last 50 years, with workers today earning just 12 cents more than they did in 1972. And with inflation at its highest since 1971, Americans are feeling the pain of slow wage growth. Two-thirds of American workers said that inflation has outpaced any salary gains made in the past year. But some economists argue that the concept is merely a myth politicians use to promote their careers. So, how real is wage stagnation in America today and what does it mean for American workers?
And CNBC takes a look at why Americans have so much debt. Household debt in America reached $16.15 trillion during the second quarter of 2022. And debt is likely to grow even further due to soaring inflation. 43% of Americans are expected to add even more debt within the next six months. So why are so many Americans in debt today and what impact does it have on the U.S. economy?
Money can be stressful in the U.S. Americans are more worried than ever about money and the economy. In a survey by the American Psychological Association, 87% of Americans said inflation and the rising costs of everyday expenses were causing them stress. Roughly two out of every five U.S. adults said money is negatively impacting their mental health, according to Bankrate. American middle class
The American middle class is a social class in the United States. While the concept is typically ambiguous in popular opinion and common language use, contemporary social scientists have put forward several more or less congruent theories on the American middle class. Depending on the class model used, the middle class constitutes anywhere from 25% to 66% of households.
One of the first major studies of the middle class in America was White Collar: The American Middle Classes, published in 1951 by sociologist C. Wright Mills. Later sociologists such as Dennis Gilbert of Hamilton College commonly divide the middle class into two sub-groups. Constituting roughly 15% to 20% of households is the upper or professional middle class consisting of highly educated, salaried professionals and managers. Constituting roughly one third of households is the lower middle class consisting mostly of semi-professionals, skilled craftsmen and lower-level management. Middle-class persons commonly have a comfortable standard of living, significant economic security, considerable work autonomy and rely on their expertise to sustain themselves.

Outgoing Republican Senator Mitt Romney had some, uh, fairly harsh words for the United States of America after a lot of people over the last few weeks have, of course been freaking out, not only about Donald Trump's cabinet picks, but also about his threats to destroy the entire United States economy. And Mitt Romney just wants people to know that, uh, you voted for the guy, you picked him, he told you he was gonna do it. So don't you dare complain. And this may be one of the only times in my life where I actually agree with MIT Romney, but here is what Mitt Romney said on CNN's State of the Union this past Sunday. Donald Trump won. He won overwhelmingly, you know what? Go ahead and stop right there because no, no, he didn't. He got a plurality of votes. He didn't even get a majority of the votes. He did not cross the 50% mark.
He won by one and a half percent of the popular votes. So don't you dare try to convince people he won. Overwhelmingly he won, absolutely, but it was not by a mandate. So make sure you get that right next time, Romney. But he continued, he said what he was going to do, and that's what he's doing. I mean, people are saying, oh, I don't like this appointment or this policy that he is talking about, but those are all the things he said he was going to do when he ran. So you can't complain about someone who does what he said he was going to do.
And again, on those things, Romney's, a hundred percent right? We have already seen multiple different polls, we have seen posts on social media. You know, Buzzfeed did a, a big collection of posts less than a week after the election of all these people expressing buyer's remorse. A a poll came out just a couple days ago, an AP NORC poll that showed that a majority of Americans have already lost all faith in Donald Trump's decision making abilities. Like 60% of the country has no faith in Donald Trump's ability to make decisions. And that was, you know, a month after a plurality of people went to the polls and said, yep, let's put him back in the White House. Donald Trump is not going to cruise through an easy four years. I mean, I know he does have the media in his pocket now they're gonna do whatever the hell he wants him to do. But even with the media bowing down to Donald Trump, that's not going to convince most people in this country that their lives are better when clearly they will not be under these Trump policies. I mean, hell, if the media telling you that the economy was doing just fine during the Biden years, still led to them not voting for a Democrat, then the media telling you that Trump is actually okay is not gonna convince these people
Either. So, you know, it is a two-way street there that I guess kind of works out in our favor. But Trump, to his credit, did not spring all of this on us until after the election. He had been telling us for months and months and months he was gonna do these tariffs, that even conservative economists were warning like, Hey, that's going to destroy the economy. We're going to go into a recession, possibly a depression. The voters didn't care either they chose to ignore that, or they willingly chose to just not educate themselves. I don't know which one it is. Uh, I think it's a combination of both to a degree. But in the end, Trump told you what he was gonna do. He told you it was gonna, he literally sent out a fundraising email that said, I am your retribution. And now you're all terrified.

The autobiography was a runaway bestseller, spending 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 13 of those at number one.
The film is being produced by Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, Andrew Lazar, Bradley Cooper and Peter Morgan. Tim Moore, Jason Hall, Sheroum Kim and Bruce Berman are serving as executive producers.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Tom Stern (“Changeling”); Oscar-nominated production designer James J. Murakami (“Changeling”) and production designer Charisse Cardenas; Oscar-winning editor Joel Cox (“Unforgiven”) and editor Gary D. Roach; and costume designer Deborah Hopper.
Opening December 25, 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures presents In Association with Village Roadshow Pictures, A Mad Chance Production, A 22nd & Indiana Production, “American Sniper.” The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.
