Renaissance Discoveries: Petrarch
In this video we look at Petrarch (1304-1374), the poet and scholar who has been called ‘the ‘founder of modern European culture’ and even ‘the first modern man’. He was modern not so much because he looked forward but, ironically, because he cast his gaze back, a thousand years and more into the past, to the writers of antiquity. Looking at the ruins of his own civilisation, he believed poets and historians needed to forge a better future by coming to terms with the past, and by making the precious legacy of the past come to life in the present.

A conversation between Christopher S. Celenza (Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins University), Jill Kraye (Warburg Institute), François Quiviger (Warburg Institute).
Born in Tuscany in 1304, Italian poet Francesco Petrarca is widely considered one of the fathers of the modern Italian language. Though his writings inspired the humanist movement and subsequently the Renaissance, Petrarch remains misunderstood. He was a man of contradictions—a Roman pagan devotee and a devout Christian, a lover of friendship and sociability, yet intensely private.
In this biography, Christopher S. Celenza revisits Petrarch’s life and work. He brings to light Petrarch’s unrequited love for his poetic muse, the anti-institutional attitude he developed as he sought a path to modernity by looking backward to antiquity, and his endless focus on himself.
Christopher S. Celenza is the James B. Knapp Dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. He is also a professor of history and classics. He is the author or editor of 11 books and more than 40 scholarly articles in the fields of Italian Renaissance history, post-classical Latin literature and philosophy, and the history of classical scholarship.
Jill Kraye is Emeritus Professor and Honorary Fellow of the Warburg Institute.
Renaissance Lives is a series of biographies published by Reaktion Books as well as a series of conversations discussing the ways in which individuals transmitted or changed the lives of traditions, ideas and images. https://warburg.sas.ac.uk/renaissance-lives
In the first season staff, fellows and former fellows of the Warburg Institute will discuss the lives of Petrarch, Botticelli, Bosch, Erasmus, Paracelsus, Tycho Brahe, Rembrandt, Rubens and Newton with the authors of their biographies published in the Renaissance Lives Reaktion series.

His Latin works were ‘Bucolium Carmen’ and ‘Africa.’ Twelve pastoral poems make up the ‘Bucolium Carmen’. ‘Africa’ is an epic that the poet failed to finish. Both these works were hugely popular. Petrarch was born on July 20th , 1304, in Arezzo, a city in central Italy. The great Dante was his father’s friend.
Petrarch was named Francesco Petracco by his family. The name was anglicized to Petrarch. Petrarch was instrumental in making the writings of the Roman senator Cicero popular by public reading. He also translated the ‘Penitential psalms.’ Petrarch died on July 19th, 1374.

Petrarch considered a great poet
Petrarch the poet was the master of the sonnet. Not only was he among the first to write the Italian sonnet, he also developed and popularized this fourteen-line poem. So much so that the Italian sonnet is called the Petrarchan sonnet in his honour. Petrarch wrote in Italian and Latin. His Italian works, the ‘Canzoniere or Songbook’ and the ‘Trionfi or Triumphs’ were major successes.

The elephant has always been the most coveted trophy among leisure hunters. Their size – the largest land mammal on the planet – and large ivory tusks have attracted the greed of men who, from the beginning of time have pursued the pachyderm eager for its tusks, its meat and its thick skin.
The devastating slaughters by ivory hunters and the gradual loss of habitats brought on by increased human populations in Africa, reduced an elephant population.
The creation of national parks and a set of international measures including the prohibition of the ivory trade have slowed down what seemed to be a race towards extinction. But for elephants, the future is still uncertain.
One of the best African parks for observing and studying elephants is Amboseli, in southern Kenya.
Elephants play in important role in the ecosystem where they live. They are one of the few animals capable of modifying their surrounding environment which can cause serious environmental problems – and their activity is followed by that of many smaller species.
Amboseli has always been an area where elephants have found protection. The Masai tribe kept poachers at bay and since the creation of the national park the Wildlife Department guards the herds. Consequently, Amboseli is one of the last places in Africa where the elephant population is intact.
The families have members of all ages, from new-borns to matriarchs more than 60 years old. And what is even more rare nowadays, there is a large number of adult males between 40 and 50 years old, when in the rest of Africa few males live beyond the age of 25 since their larger tusks make them the poachers’ first target.
The powerful tusks of African elephants are indispensable instruments. They are tools for digging in the ground in search of water, salt and roots; they are used to remove the bark from trees, as an exhibition element, as a defensive or offensive weapon and as a means of supporting and protecting the trunk. But unfortunately they are made of ivory, which has always attracted the greed of man.
In 1988, an average of three elephants per day were lost to poachers.
The poaching problem not only affects the animals that are killed for their ivory. The death of these adults leaves their offspring helpless; without the group’s protection they have no chance of surviving. Or so it was until David and Daphne Sheldrick arrived at the Tsavo National Park, near Amboseli.
In Amboseli, the dilemma of the elephants lies ahead for those responsible for the park. The elephants are increasing in number and no agreement has been reached on how to control them. But it would be sad to think that man, capable of the greatest scientific and intellectual advances and responsible for the elephants’ situation in Africa, could find no other solution than the barbaric slaughtering of such marvellous creatures.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Denys (Robert Redford) shampoos the tangles out of Karen's (Meryl Streep) hair and recites poetry by the river.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Out of Africa is drawn from the life and writings of Danish author Isak Dinesen, who during the time that the film's events occured was known by her married name, Karen Blixen-Flecke. For convenience's sake, Karen (Meryl Streep) has married Baron Bor Blixen-Flecke (Klaus Maria Brandauer). In 1914, the Baron moves himself and his wife to a plantation in Nairobi, then leaves Karen to her own devices as he returns to his womanizing and drinking. Soon, Karen has fallen in love with charming white hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford), who prefers a no-strings relationship. A woman who prides herself on her independence, Blixen finds herself unhappily in thrall to a aloof man -- and doubly unhappy for living out such a cliché situation. Although Redford received a lion's share of criticism for his too-American performance, Streep has rarely been better, and the film's perfectly measured pace is offset by David Watkin's stunning location photography. The movie was nominated for 11
Academy Awards and won 7, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sydney Pollack, Best Adapted Screenplay for Kurt Luedtke, and Best Cinematography for Watkin.
CREDITS:

Cast: Robert Redford, Meryl Streep
Director: Sydney Pollack
Producers: Anna Cataldi, Terence A. Clegg, Kim Jorgensen, Sydney Pollack, Judith Thurman
