Why Fake Kylie Jenner Lip Kits Could Be Dangerous | Shady | Refinery29
Follow Refinery29 to Downtown Los Angeles’ infamous Santee Alley shopping district, where you'll find dozens of displays bursting with hot-ticket fake makeup items like Kylie Lip Kits, Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighters, and MAC lipsticks. Ten years ago, this stretch was the place to go for knock-off handbags — and if they weren't already out in the open, all you had to do was ask. Today, there isn't a fake purse in sight; they've all been replaced by contouring palettes.

Why "Fake It Until You Make It" Is Actually Great Advice
If you want to be the person you want to be, you don't have to "feel like it" first. Don't wait until you're "ready" because time is short. Instead, fake it until you make it, because that's what successful people do. Act and you will become.

Why is Instagram dominated by fake accounts? What is fake, what is real on Instagram? Since Instagram was founded followers and accounts have grown insanely. But how can you see on Instagram which accounts and followers are real, and which are fake? A documentary that investigates why and how fake followers dominate Instagram.
This documentary is a cross-media research into the economy that has emerged since Instagram has been established: sometimes creative and innovative, but sometimes also very shadowy. As a viewer, you follow Nicolaas Veul and the making of the account @followme.doc. He tries all the tips and tricks to gain popularity, interviews key players and influencer and reflects on his findings.
Programme maker Nicolaas Veul looks into the financial world behind Instagram. A completely new revenue model has emerged on this social platform: likes and followers have become strong competitors.
What kind of shadow economy is created as a result? What is real and what is fake? How do you fight the algorithm? Who are the winners and who are the losers? And what do you notice when you scroll through your feed? With #followme the VPRO produces the first documentary about Instagram on Instagram.
In #followme Nicolaas Veul wonders who the winners and who the losers are in this new industry.
How do you fight the algorithm? He talks with various influencers and with the Amsterdam Agency for Digital Influencer Marketing: IMA. They know better than anyone how the Instagram industry works. In addition, he travels to Russia where home-bound young mothers write comments for money. In America, he meets social media software developer Dovetale who developed an instrument to recognize fake followers and bots. Travel influencer Sara Melotti reports in Milan about her - she says - violent relationship with the medium. And a wholesaler in fake followers anonymously opens a book about fraud on Instagram. There seem to be no rules in this new economy: welcome to the Wild West called Instagram.
Original title: #followme
The vertical documentary premiered on November 21 on the new video channel of Instagram: IGTV.

But let me tell you something:

Ruurd Oosterwoud is the founder of DROG, an organization that creates proactive and applied solutions to reduce the impact of disinformation on society, governments and businesses. DROG has specialized in pre-emptive debunking, or ‘pre-bunking’, developing antidotes to disinformation. In partnership with researchers at Cambridge University they are providing evidence that their innovative and unconventional approach is seriously effective.
In 2018, DROG organized a preliminary disinformation attack on the European Parliamentary elections of 2019, launched a very successful serious game where you have to become a fake news monger and has advised the European Commission and the British House of Commons.
Ruurd has an MA in Russian and Eurasian Studies at the University of Leiden. He was the first to specialize in Russian disinformation.
Disinformation and fake news. How does it work, what does it do to us, and how can we fight it? Regulation is the key, many people think. Start to regulate information as well as journalism. Politicians have a specific interest in regulating all information that is brought into the world.
As Ruurd argues, the only way we can understand how targeting works, is if we start thinking like the bad guy/girl and be pro-active instead of reactive. Become a bad guy to recognise a bad guy, become a troll ourselves! Who are the enemies and who are the allies? Ruurd invites us to join his troll army.
