United States presidential election, 1984
The United States presidential election of 1984 was the 50th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 6, 1984. The contest was between the incumbent President Ronald Reagan, the Republican candidate, and former Vice President Walter Mondale, the Democratic candidate.
Reagan carried 49 of the 50 states, becoming one of only two candidates to do so (the other was Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election). Reagan touted a strong economic recovery from 1970s stagflation and the 1981-82 recession, as well as the widespread perception that his presidency had overseen a revival of national confidence and prestige.
Although Mondale received 40.6% of the popular vote, electoral votes are awarded on a winner-take-all basis in each state, resulting in a lopsided electoral vote count. Mondale's only electoral votes came from the District of Columbia, which has never given its electoral votes to a Republican candidate, and his home state of Minnesota, which he won by a mere 3,761 votes.

United States presidential election, 1960
The United States presidential election of 1960 was the 44th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 1960. The Republican Party nominated incumbent Vice President Richard Nixon, while the Democratic Party nominated John F. Kennedy, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. The incumbent President, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, was not eligible for re-election after being elected the maximum two times allowed by the Twenty-second Amendment; he was the first President affected by that amendment. This was the first presidential election in which voters in Alaska and Hawaii were able to participate, as both had become states in 1959.
Kennedy received 112,827 (0.17%) more votes than Nixon nationwide and although Nixon won the popular vote contest in more individual states (26 to 22), the electoral votes held by those various states, when cast, gave Kennedy an Electoral College victory of 303 to 219. Nixon was the first candidate in American presidential electoral history to lose an election despite carrying a majority of the states.

The 2006 United States midterm elections were held on Tuesday, November 7, 2006. All United States House of Representatives seats and one third of the United States Senate seats were contested in this election, as well as 36 state governorships, many state legislatures, four territorial legislatures and many state and local races. The election resulted in a sweeping victory for the Democratic Party which captured control of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and won a majority of governorships and state legislatures from the Republican Party.
The victory of the Democratic Party in the 2006 Congressional elections was a major milestone for an additional reason: it saw the election of the first woman to serve as the Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi, the leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, became the highest-ranking woman in the history of the government of the United States upon her election as Speaker in January 2007. In the United States, the Speaker is not only the presiding officer and leader of the majority party, but the Speaker also directly follows the Vice President of the United States in the line of succession to the presidency. It was also the first election in U.S. history in which the losses for one side were so lopsided that the victorious party did not lose a single incumbent or open seat in Congress or governor's mansion.

The 50th Presidential election in American history took place on November 6, 1984, on my third birthday. Yep, this was the first presidential election I was alive to witness, although I don’t remember it at all. Man, I guess that means I’m almost finally done with this series. Wow.
Anyway, Ronald Reagan was easily renominated as the Republican nominee after a strong first term. The economy had rebounded, and many Americans seemed to credit Reagan for getting the rest of the world to respect the country more. Sure, the government didn’t shrink much, and military spending went way up, but that seemed to be what everyone wanted. Reagan talked trash about the Soviet Union, but more discreetly took the beginning steps to help end the Cold War.
Vice President George H.W. Bush was also easily renominated. This was the only time both a vice presidential roll call and presidential roll call was done at the same time.
While at least eight Democrats sought their party’s nomination, only three won any state primaries. One was Jesse Jackson, a civil rights activist and Baptist minister, and the first African American to be a serious contender for the Presidency. Another was Gary Hart, a Senator from Colorado, who became the main rival to Walter Mondale, the former Vice President in the Carter administration, who appeared to be the one to beat. Well Hart came close, but Mondale came out as the winner. In a somewhat surprising move, Mondale went with Geraldine Ferraro, a Representative from New York, as his running mate. She became the first major party female vice presidential candidate in American history. Mondale and the Democrats probably figured, what the heck, Reagan is so popular, we need to do whatever we possibly can to get the attention of voters to sway them our way.
Despite his old age- Reagan was now 73- he seemed unstoppable. Still, opponents questioned how well he could continue to be the commander in chief at his age. In response, at one of the debates between him and Mondale, he joked, "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."
Mondale criticized Reagan’s supply side economics, or more commonly called “trickle-down economics” and called attention to the rising budget deficits. His solution? Raise taxes. Sure, the people love hearing that. Despite Ferraro being the first major party female vice presidential candidate, she didn’t generate the excitement that Democrats at originally anticipated.

The 44th Presidential election in American history took place on November 8, 1960. It was the first election in which Alaska and Hawaii could both participate. Dwight Eisenhower had a pretty good run, but he was the first President officially not allowed to seek a third term. His Vice President for eight years, Richard Nixon, now enthusiastically sought the Presidency. Several Republicans, however, supported Nelson Rockefeller, the Governor of New York and the member of the wealthy Rockefeller family. Rockefeller was the leader of the liberal/moderate wing of the Republican Party.
After he decided to drop out of the race, Nixon easily won the Republican nomination, but he was a little worried he didn’t have the Rockefeller Republicans on his side, so he met with Rockefeller to make sure they were on the same page on many issues. By doing this, Nixon sort of officially became a big government Republican, you could say. Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, was Nixon’s running mate. Lodge was a familiar name, as he was the grandson of Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and also had a bunch of other ancestors who were involved with national politics.
The Democrats knew they had to nominate someone exciting to get back to the White House. Many Democrats were interested. Most of them were new to the national scene, but most were just not that exciting. Pat Brown, the governor of California, wanted the nomination, but wasn’t that exciting. Stuart Symington, a Senator from Missouri, wanted it and was a bit more exciting. Then there was Adlai Stevenson, who had lost the last two presidential elections. Meh, not exciting. Wayne Morse, a Senator from Oregon. Better. Lyndon Johnson, the Senate Majority Leader. Even better. Hubert Humphrey, a Senator from Minnesota, yeah, kind of got people fired up. But really, there was just one man that energized the Democratic Party far more than any other. John Kennedy. And despite some harsh criticism that he was too young to be President- he was just 43 after all, the Democratic Party went with him anyway.
Even though Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson had their disagreements, Kennedy helped unite the party behind him by asking Johnson to be his running mate, and Johnson accepted.
So it was Nixon versus Kennedy. Both of them drew huge, enthusiastic crowds everywhere they went. Nixon promised to campaign in all 50 states, even Alaska and Hawaii. He probably later regretted that promise, however, after he hurt his knee on a car door and the knee got severely infected. After he recovered two weeks later, he stayed true to his pledge, but some historians say he was an idiot for doing so, as he likely just wasted valuable time visiting states he had no chance of winning anyway.
Lyndon Johnson greatly helped Kennedy by aggressively campaigning in the South. It was actually quite a smart move for Kennedy to choose him as his running mate. Still, several Americans criticized Kennedy for his youth, and just like with Al Smith in 1928, there were plenty of Protestants who didn’t want Kennedy, a Roman Catholic, as President because of his religion.
Since the economy was strong, Kennedy and Nixon often attacked each other on foreign policy. Believe it or not, this was the first time live presidential debates were held in the general election. There were four of them, and they were all on television, so it was a pretty big deal. For the first debate, most people who listened to it on the radio agreed that Nixon won. However, for those who saw it on TV, most agreed that Kennedy won. Why? Many say that Nixon looked uncomfortable and weak. He kept sweating, and was still recovering from his recent knee injury. He was tired from campaigning all day, and hadn’t worn any makeup, so his beard stubble showed up to viewers at home. Meanwhile, Kennedy looked rested, tan, and confident during the debate. It’s pretty crazy how many agree that appearing on television literally changed the outcome of this election.
However, going into election day, it was difficult to tell who would win. Everyone knew it would be close, and therefore this election became one of the most suspenseful and dramatic in American history.

Ad from the 1960 United States presidential election. The Republican Party nominated incumbent Vice President Richard Nixon, while the Democratic Party nominated John F. Kennedy, Senator from Massachusetts.
This was the first presidential election in which voters in Alaska and Hawaii were able to participate (both had become states in 1959). It is notable as being the first presidential election in which both major party candidates were born in the 20th Century. It was also the first one in which two incumbent U.S. Senators (Kennedy and Johnson) were elected as president and vice president, a phenomenon that was repeated by Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2008. In both instances the president-elect was the younger of the two and also the junior senator from his state.

From 1984, the second and final presidential debate between incumbent President Ronald Reagan and former Vice President Walter Mondale, his Democratic challenger. The candidates answered questions from a panel of journalists on defense and foreign policy issues, including U.S. involvement and CIA activities in Central America, negotiations with the Soviet Union on nuclear stockpiles and strategic weapons systems, and fighting terrorism in Lebanon and the broader Middle East. The Republican ticket of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush defeated Walter Mondale and Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro in the general election, winning the popular vote 59 to 41 percent.

The 50th episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. On Election Day in 1984, Mr. Beat turns three years old, so obviously he vividly remembers how this one went down.

The 50th Presidential election in American history took place on November 6, 1984, on my third birthday. Yep, this was the first presidential election I was alive to witness, although I don’t remember it at all. Man, I guess that means I’m almost finally done with this series. Wow.
Anyway, Ronald Reagan was easily renominated as the Republican nominee after a strong first term. The economy had rebounded, and many Americans seemed to credit Reagan for getting the rest of the world to respect the country more. Sure, the government didn’t shrink much, and military spending went way up, but that seemed to be what everyone wanted. Reagan talked trash about the Soviet Union, but more discreetly took the beginning steps to help end the Cold War.
Vice President George H.W. Bush was also easily renominated. This was the only time both a vice presidential roll call and presidential roll call was done at the same time.
While at least eight Democrats sought their party’s nomination, only three won any state primaries. One was Jesse Jackson, a civil rights activist and Baptist minister, and the first African American to be a serious contender for the Presidency. Another was Gary Hart, a Senator from Colorado, who became the main rival to Walter Mondale, the former Vice President in the Carter administration, who appeared to be the one to beat. Well Hart came close, but Mondale came out as the winner. In a somewhat surprising move, Mondale went with Geraldine Ferraro, a Representative from New York, as his running mate. She became the first major party female vice presidential candidate in American history. Mondale and the Democrats probably figured, what the heck, Reagan is so popular, we need to do whatever we possibly can to get the attention of voters to sway them our way.
Despite his old age- Reagan was now 73- he seemed unstoppable. Still, opponents questioned how well he could continue to be the commander in chief at his age. In response, at one of the debates between him and Mondale, he joked, "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."
Mondale criticized Reagan’s supply side economics, or more commonly called “trickle-down economics” and called attention to the rising budget deficits. His solution? Raise taxes. Sure, the people love hearing that. Despite Ferraro being the first major party female vice presidential candidate, she didn’t generate the excitement that Democrats at originally anticipated.

United States presidential election, 1984
The United States presidential election of 1984 was the 50th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 6, 1984. The contest was between the incumbent President Ronald Reagan, the Republican candidate, and former Vice President Walter Mondale, the Democratic candidate.
Reagan carried 49 of the 50 states, becoming one of only two candidates to do so (the other was Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election). Reagan touted a strong economic recovery from 1970s stagflation and the 1981-82 recession, as well as the widespread perception that his presidency had overseen a revival of national confidence and prestige.
Although Mondale received 40.6% of the popular vote, electoral votes are awarded on a winner-take-all basis in each state, resulting in a lopsided electoral vote count. Mondale's only electoral votes came from the District of Columbia, which has never given its electoral votes to a Republican candidate, and his home state of Minnesota, which he won by a mere 3,761 votes.

The 44th Presidential election in American history took place on November 8, 1960. It was the first election in which Alaska and Hawaii could both participate. Dwight Eisenhower had a pretty good run, but he was the first President officially not allowed to seek a third term. His Vice President for eight years, Richard Nixon, now enthusiastically sought the Presidency. Several Republicans, however, supported Nelson Rockefeller, the Governor of New York and the member of the wealthy Rockefeller family. Rockefeller was the leader of the liberal/moderate wing of the Republican Party.
After he decided to drop out of the race, Nixon easily won the Republican nomination, but he was a little worried he didn’t have the Rockefeller Republicans on his side, so he met with Rockefeller to make sure they were on the same page on many issues. By doing this, Nixon sort of officially became a big government Republican, you could say. Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, was Nixon’s running mate. Lodge was a familiar name, as he was the grandson of Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and also had a bunch of other ancestors who were involved with national politics.
The Democrats knew they had to nominate someone exciting to get back to the White House. Many Democrats were interested. Most of them were new to the national scene, but most were just not that exciting. Pat Brown, the governor of California, wanted the nomination, but wasn’t that exciting. Stuart Symington, a Senator from Missouri, wanted it and was a bit more exciting. Then there was Adlai Stevenson, who had lost the last two presidential elections. Meh, not exciting. Wayne Morse, a Senator from Oregon. Better. Lyndon Johnson, the Senate Majority Leader. Even better. Hubert Humphrey, a Senator from Minnesota, yeah, kind of got people fired up. But really, there was just one man that energized the Democratic Party far more than any other. John Kennedy. And despite some harsh criticism that he was too young to be President- he was just 43 after all, the Democratic Party went with him anyway.
Even though Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson had their disagreements, Kennedy helped unite the party behind him by asking Johnson to be his running mate, and Johnson accepted.
So it was Nixon versus Kennedy. Both of them drew huge, enthusiastic crowds everywhere they went. Nixon promised to campaign in all 50 states, even Alaska and Hawaii. He probably later regretted that promise, however, after he hurt his knee on a car door and the knee got severely infected. After he recovered two weeks later, he stayed true to his pledge, but some historians say he was an idiot for doing so, as he likely just wasted valuable time visiting states he had no chance of winning anyway.
Lyndon Johnson greatly helped Kennedy by aggressively campaigning in the South. It was actually quite a smart move for Kennedy to choose him as his running mate. Still, several Americans criticized Kennedy for his youth, and just like with Al Smith in 1928, there were plenty of Protestants who didn’t want Kennedy, a Roman Catholic, as President because of his religion.
Since the economy was strong, Kennedy and Nixon often attacked each other on foreign policy. Believe it or not, this was the first time live presidential debates were held in the general election. There were four of them, and they were all on television, so it was a pretty big deal. For the first debate, most people who listened to it on the radio agreed that Nixon won. However, for those who saw it on TV, most agreed that Kennedy won. Why? Many say that Nixon looked uncomfortable and weak. He kept sweating, and was still recovering from his recent knee injury. He was tired from campaigning all day, and hadn’t worn any makeup, so his beard stubble showed up to viewers at home. Meanwhile, Kennedy looked rested, tan, and confident during the debate. It’s pretty crazy how many agree that appearing on television literally changed the outcome of this election.
However, going into election day, it was difficult to tell who would win. Everyone knew it would be close, and therefore this election became one of the most suspenseful and dramatic in American history.

Ad from the 1960 United States presidential election. The Republican Party nominated incumbent Vice President Richard Nixon, while the Democratic Party nominated John F. Kennedy, Senator from Massachusetts.
This was the first presidential election in which voters in Alaska and Hawaii were able to participate (both had become states in 1959). It is notable as being the first presidential election in which both major party candidates were born in the 20th Century. It was also the first one in which two incumbent U.S. Senators (Kennedy and Johnson) were elected as president and vice president, a phenomenon that was repeated by Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2008. In both instances the president-elect was the younger of the two and also the junior senator from his state.
