View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/is-radiation-dangerous-matt-anticole
When we hear the word radiation, it’s tempting to picture huge explosions and frightening mutations. But that’s not the full story — radiation also applies to rainbows and a doctor examining an X-ray. So what is it, really, and how much should we worry about its effects? Matt Anticole describes the different types of radiation.

Biological Effects of Radiation
Scientists have been studying the effects of radiation on the body for over 100 years, so we know quite a bit about how radiation interacts with living tissue. This video takes a closer look at how the amount of radiation our bodies receive, otherwise known as the dose, can affect the cells in our bodies. How do radio frequency radiation and electromagnetic fields affect human beings?
All living organisms are sensitive to radio frequency radiation (RFR) and electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Life depends on this sensitivity at the correct intensity. For example, radiation from the sun helps humans make vitamin D, but too much causes cancer. Scientific evidence shows that some people can sense changes in atmospheric electricity like thunderstorms, while 3.6% are sensitive to man-made RFR/EMFs. To protect these people and others from man-made RFR/EMFs, governments must adopt guidelines that include non-thermal effects.

0:38 Radiation therapy technology has changed dramatically in the past decade. Past concerns that doctors and patients had about radiation have been resolved. One concern is that the radiation would cause a new cancer, but we now know that this occurs only in extremely rare cases often decades after the treatment, and we are able to detect these types of cancer sooner. Incontinence used to be a concern, but in modern times this side effect is more often associated with radical prostatectomy than with radiation. It is rare to get incontinence from radiation therapy. Intestinal burns were a concern with older radiation therapy, but modern technology is more accurate and FDA approved treatments are available to protect the rectum from radiation.
2:14 Short-term side effects of radiation therapy. Mild to moderate fatigue can be a side effect of radiation therapy. Radiation therapy can cause soreness around the area being treated by radiation. If this side effect becomes intolerable, men will often take a holiday from the radiation treatment and resume at a later date. Long-term radiation protocols can be inconvenient since many forms of radiation have to be administered five days a week for a few months.
3:12 Long-term side effects. Impotence can develop in the long term from radiation therapy. It is common. Occurring in up to 50% of men treated with radiation therapy. After treatment, men will experience dry orgasms since the prostate is what creates semen. Men may become infertile after treatment, although having children through artificial insemination is typically still possible.
4:17 Rare side effects. In rare cases, urethral scarring can occur which can cause a blockage called a urethral stricture. The treatment for this can in some cases cause incontinence. Treatment for strictures should be performed by specialists. The bladder base can get irritated from radiation therapy, and this can cause greater urinary urgency, greater frequency, and waking up in the middle of the night to urinate more often. If these problems are preexisting, they can be made worse by radiation therapy.
5:57 Side effects are less common when the treatment is performed by a competent radiation therapist. It is important to find a good doctor if you choose this treatment for prostate cancer.

Ionizing Radiation: Breast Cancer Risk Factor
Just 10% of breast cancer risk can be solely explained by genetics. That means that 90% of risk is related to factors that we can both directly, and indirectly, impact for positive health outcomes.
For most people, the largest source of exposure to ionizing radiation is from medical diagnostic procedures, which include x-rays, mammograms, CT scans, and fluoroscopy. Currently, only mammography undergoes close federal oversight. CT scans are of the greatest concern because of their higher doses and frequent use. In the U.S. one CT scan is performed per four individuals and the radiation levels at these examinations are up to 500 times the level of an x-ray radiograph.
For some people, other sources of ionizing radiation exposure include air travel. Work in the nuclear industry, as well as ...

Revolutionizing Scoliosis Imaging Without Ionizing Radiation
New surface imaging technology could make ionizing radiation a thing of the past in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. A team of researchers from HSS is learning how to accurately and reliably correlate EOS radiographic data with 3D topographic scanning data obtained from a highly precise 3D-camera system. Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Chief Roger Widmann, MD, and Howard Hillstrom, PhD, Director of the Leon Root, MD Motion Analysis Laboratory at HSS, describe what makes this research so exciting.

John Tuffy, HIQA Regional Manager (Ionising Radiation) explains what ionising radiation is and describes the potential for damage to cells and tissues in those exposed to radiation. For each exposure to ionising radiation, the benefit for carrying out an exposure must always outweigh the potential detriment the exposure can cause.
Introduction of new legislation promoting radiation protection measures will help regulate the practices and procedures that a patient receives as part of their diagnosis or treatment in line with national legislation.
Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom was transposed into Irish law as European Union (Basic Safety Standards for Protection Against Dangers Arising from Medical Exposure to Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2018.
The regulations define new minimum safety requirements to protect individuals from hazards associated with medical exposures to ionising radiation.
A medical exposure to ionising radiation is when a patient receives ionising radiation as part of their diagnosis or treatment. It also includes exposure to radiation for medical or biomedical research purposes as well as carers and comforters exposed to ionising radiation while attending a patient.

"Fascinatingly, the National Institute of Radiological Sciences told Japan Times they'd never even considered working with radiation this high, which is scary. Now that the cleanup crews finally have access to Reactor 2, they think they might be able to start removing the nuclear material by 2021, although some say later."
Acute Radiation Syndrome: A Fact Sheet for Clinicians
https://emergency.cdc.gov/radiation/arsphysicianfactsheet.asp
"Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) (sometimes known as radiation toxicity or radiation sickness) is an acute illness caused by irradiation of the entire body (or most of the body) by a high dose of penetrating radiation in a very short period of time (usually a matter of minutes). The major cause of this syndrome is depletion of immature parenchymal stem cells in specific tissues."

Work in the nuclear industry, as well as exposure to nuclear weapons production, use, and testing, affects military personnel, civilians, and nearby communities.
Radiation not only increases cancer risk but can also interact with, trigger, or amplify, the impacts of other breast cancer risk factors.
