Dr. Robert Lustig: How Sugar & Processed Foods Impact Your Health
In this episode, my guest is Dr. Robert Lustig, M.D., neuroendocrinologist, professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and a bestselling author on nutrition and metabolic health. We address the “calories in- calories out” (CICO) model of metabolism and weight regulation and how specific macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates), fiber and sugar can modify the CICO equation. We cover how different types of sugars, specifically fructose, sugars found in liquid form, taste intensity, and other factors impact insulin levels, liver, kidney, and metabolic health. We also explore how fructose in non-fruit sources can be addictive (acting similarly to drugs of abuse) and how sugar alters brain circuits related to food cravings and satisfaction. We discuss the...

Robert Lustig, MD. Food, Metabolism, and Psychiatric Disease
Dr. Robert Lustig is a pediatric endocrinologist known for his research on the effects of sugar consumption on health, particularly the relationship between sugar and central nervous system diseases. His thesis suggests that excessive sugar intake, especially fructose, can have adverse effects on the central nervous system. Lustig argues that high sugar consumption can lead to insulin resistance and chronic metabolic diseases, potentially impacting brain function. His presentations and research often focus on the harmful effects of sugar, particularly fructose, on various aspects of health. It's important to note that while there is ongoing debate on this topic, Lustig's work has contributed to discussions on the potential healt...

The obesity epidemic isn’t about calories-in-calories-out. Instead, chronic stress and high insulin levels from refined carbs and sugar are drivers of fat storage. And the type of fat stored matters, since visceral fat accumulation leads to worsening metabolic health. Dr. Robert Lustig and Mike Haney discuss the different types of fat and how they are stored and burned; what thin on the outside, fat on the inside means; whether people can be healthy at any size; environmental factors that contribute to obesity; and what people can do to manage weight.
📍What Robert Lustig, MD, & Mike Haney discuss:

Click on the play link below the short video to see the full video.
Robert Lustig, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist, has criticized the ketogenic (keto) diet, particularly for certain groups of people. He believes that children and teenagers, pregnant women, and individuals with certain medical conditions, like fatty liver disease, should be cautious when considering the keto diet. Lustig argues that the diet's high fat content can be detrimental for these groups. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant dietary changes, especially if you fall into one of these categories.

While sugar is easy to spot in candy, soft drinks and ice cream, it also hides out in foods you might not expect -- including peanut butter, pasta sauce and even bologna! Robert Lustig decodes confusing labels and sugar's many aliases to help determine just how much of that sweet carbohydrate makes its way into our diets.

It's important to note that while there is ongoing debate on this topic, Lustig's work has contributed to discussions on the potential health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption.

00:00 — Intro
09:40 — Three things are required for fat storage to occur
21:54 — The key to fat loss is reducing insulin
23:39 — Refined carbohydrates lead to fat storage
32:41 — What is metabolically healthy obesity?
42:05 — Visceral fat causes “metabolic mayhem”
45:40 — What is thin on the outside fat on the inside?
50:27 — Stress causes the accumulation of visceral fat
58:06 — Exercise helps burn visceral fat
01:00:58 — The key to being healthy
1:06:12 — Endocrine-disrupting chemicals also play a role in obesity
1:26:46 — Is there such a thing as “health at any size”?

Robert Lustig, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist, has criticized the ketogenic (keto) diet, particularly for certain groups of people. He believes that children and teenagers, pregnant women, and individuals with certain medical conditions, like fatty liver disease, should be cautious when considering the keto diet. Lustig argues that the diet's high fat content can be detrimental for these groups. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant dietary changes, especially if you fall into one of these categories.
