The village was founded about 1654 by English settlers who left New Haven Colony for Dutch New Netherland on land purchased by Thomas Pell in 1654 from the sachem Ann-hock, alias Wampage, and other Native Americans. However, his right to do so was disputed by the Dutch, who also made claims on the land. The settlers followed the Westchester Creek to a path behind what is now Herbert H. Lehman High School to where the Square is now. The settlement was called Oostdorp, or East Towne, and called Westchester by the English settlers.

The #Bronx's #Westchester Square is a historic and charming neighborhood known for its rich culture and vibrant community. A #walking #tour of Westchester #Square will showcase the beauty and richness of the area's history, and is a perfect way to explore and experience the unique features that make this neighborhood a special place.
The tour will begin at Owen Dolen Park, known for its playground, amphitheater and outdoor movies. The park is also home to many community events. From there, you'll walk east on Westchester Avenue, taking note of the local storefronts and restaurants.
The tour will then turn north to reveal the neighborhood's distinctive architecture. Here, you'll see beautiful brownstones and homes featuring elements of early 20th century styles such as Art Deco or Steiner Reisenbau. Admire the ornamental detail and brick work of the various buildings and streets.
Finally, the tour will end at Middletown Road Junction, one of the busiest corners in Westchester Square. Surrounded by local businesses and a bustling foot traffic, you'll be able to experience the energy of the community.
Overall, the walking tour of Westchester Square is a great way to explore a delightful, little-known area of the Bronx and to appreciate the history and beauty of New York City's lesser-known landmarks.
