Candidates for admission must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a member of Congress or Delegate/Resident Commissioner in the case of Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. Other nomination sources include the President and Vice President of the United States. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as "cadets" or collectively as the "United States Corps of Cadets" (USCC). Tuition for cadets is fully funded by the Army in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,300 cadets enter the Academy each July, with about 1,000 cadets graduating.
The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades cadets' performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Cadets are required to adhere to the Cadet Honor Code, which states that "a cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do." The academy bases a cadet's leadership experience as a development of all three pillars of performance: academics, physical, and military.

USMC AV-8B Harrier II and Navy F/A-18 Hornets Enhance Maritime Presence in the Red Sea"
In a strategic move to bolster its military presence in the Red Sea region, the United States Marine Corps (USMC) has deployed its versatile AV-8B Harrier II aircraft alongside Navy F/A-18 Hornets. This deployment underscores the commitment to maintaining stability and safeguarding vital interests in a region of geopolitical significance.
The AV-8B Harrier II is a unique vertical and short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft, capable of operating from amphibious assault ships, making it an ideal choice for flexible and expeditionary missions. Known for its agility and precision, the Harrier II can provide air support and conduct a range of missions, from close air support to air interdiction.
Complementing the Harrier II's capabilities, the Navy's F/A-18 Hornets bring a multi-role capability to the deployment. Renowned for their speed, range, and versatility, the Hornets play a crucial role in naval aviation. They are capable of executing a wide array of missions, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground strikes, and electronic warfare.
The arrival of these aircraft in the Red Sea region serves multiple strategic purposes. First and foremost, it enhances the ability of the United States to respond rapidly to emerging threats and contingencies in the area. The V/STOL capabilities of the Harrier II allow for operations from a variety of platforms, contributing to the flexibility of the deployed forces.
Furthermore, the presence of these aircraft reinforces the commitment to regional stability and security. The Red Sea is a key maritime route with critical importance for global trade, and any disruption in the region could have far-reaching consequences. The deployment of the AV-8B Harrier II and F/A-18 Hornets sends a strong signal of deterrence, showcasing the United States' readiness to protect its interests and those of its allies.
Collaboration between the USMC and the Navy in this deployment highlights the joint nature of modern military operations. The seamless integration of these two distinct aircraft types demonstrates the interoperability of the U.S. military forces and their ability to operate together seamlessly in complex environments.
As tensions and challenges persist in the Red Sea region, the arrival of the AV-8B Harrier II and F/A-18 Hornets reaffirms the United States' commitment to maintaining a robust and adaptive military presence, ready to respond to any emerging threats and uphold stability in this strategically vital area.
