Brown Bear at the Groudle Glen Railway - 18th August 2021
Groudle Glen Railway
Wednesday 18th August 2021
Located on the Isle of Man, between Douglas and Laxey (near Onchan), the Groudle Glen Railway is a 2 foot gauge narrow gauge railway which runs uphill to the sea!
In this visit we see Brown Bear and battery electric Polar Bear hauling the evening services.
The line was originally operated by a Bagnall steam locomotive 'Sea Lion' (seen in the engine shed at the end of the video) built in 1896, joined by a second Bagnall in 1905 'Polar Bear'. 'Polar Bear' is now found at the Amberley Museum in Sussex. 'Brown Bear' was constructed as a new-build locomotive, a replica of 'Polar Bear', and was completed in 2019.
Alongside 'Sea Lion', in the engine shed we see 'Annie' a 1998 built locomotive to a Bagnall design of a locomotive from the Gentle A...

2024 BYD SEALION 6 Review | BYD’s ditches EV powertrain for new SUV – so is plug in hybrid better?
Chinese auto brand BYD is second only to Tesla in Australia’s EV sale race and if you include its hybrids it actually sells more vehicles than Tesla globally – and it’s a plug-in hybrid we’re testing here with the 2024 BYD Sealion 6.
A direct rival for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid – as well as the plug-in hybrid MG HS and Mitsubishi Outlander – this all-new mid-size SUV ticks all the boxes in terms of size, equipment levels, powertrain options and price.
Priced from $48,990 plus on-road costs, the two-grade BYD Sealion 6 range opens with the entry-level Dynamic variant and closes with the more powerful Premium flagship, which costs $52,990 plus ORCs and delivers more than 200kW of power.

Plug-in hybrid mid-size SUVs haven’t exactly captured the imagination of Aussie car buyers, so can BYD buck the trend with the first of several PHEV models it plans to launch here , as part of its stunning Australian market ambitions ? We sent Feann Torr to evaluate the model formerly known as the BYD Seal U for this full video review.

The next Railway on the list is the Groudle Glen Railway, a small narrow gauge railway with some history.
The line started off originally as a line to serve the zoo at the end of the line, which housed sea lions and polar bears, which was then put over onto the locomotives, being named Polar Bear and Sea Lion respectively. Both of these locomotives survive, Sea Lion is still at the Railway with Polar Bear now at Amberley Museum, having been brought way before the society took over the lines assets.
The lines two locos ran the line until being replaced by two battery electric locomotives, which took up the names of the steam locomotives, none of these were preserved however, with Polar Bear(mk2) seen in the video, being a replica.
The Railway as of current is a lovely scenic railway with a big forest which leads to open coastlines. At the end station, you can go right to the end and see the remains of the Polar Bear/Sea Lion enclosure. The staff were very friendly and would answer any of your questions. We were also caught on camera in there facebook live video😅
As part of the BLS experience, we had a couple of private trains which were hauled by Brown Bear and Walrus. These did all the major trackwork on the GGR, aswell as some of the rare ones.
In operation that day were;
. 'Brown Bear' (replica of 'Polar Bear'(steam))
. 'Polar Bear' (new built battery electric version)
. 'Walrus' (recently restored diesel)
Thank you all for reading, and ill see you in the next one, byeee

Sea Lion is a steam locomotive built in 1896 to supply the motive power to the Groudle Glen Railway on the Isle of Man and the locomotive still provides the main traction there today. The locomotive was built by W.G. Bagnall & Co., Stafford and delivered to the line in May of that year, providing sole motive power until joined in 1905 by sister locomotive Polar Bear. When delivered to the railway, the locomotive carried an olive green livery with vermilion and yellow lining and the name carried on the side water tank in gold leaf with blue shadowing, with distinctive round "spectacle" cab windows back and front. These were changed over to rectangular windows very early in the engine's career to improve driver visibility however. One distinctive feature was a displacement lubricator mounted atop the highly polished brass dome. The locomotive was fitted with unusual valve gear patented by E.E. Baguley and is one of only two locomotives to remain in existence with this (the other being Rishra on the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway). By the 1920 season the locomotive was deemed too costly for repair and the line purchased two battery electric locomotives that inherited their steam engine names. The modern engines proved to be financially disastrous and within a few years "Sea Lion" had been returned to the works for re-build. It continued to operate the line until closure at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.
--------------
Dolphin
This locomotive was built in 1952 by the Hunslet Engine Company for Robert Hudson, hence the unusual manufacturers' title which appears prominently, cast into the locomotive's radiator frontage. It was built as one of a trio to operate in a sand and gravel pit in Twickenham and upon closure of the pit was put up for sale, together with her two sisters. She, along with one of the other two, was purchased for use on a pleasure railway that was established at Doddington Park in Chipping Sodbury and acquired a "steam outline" structure at this time. This consisted of a sheet metal half-cab with oval windows, false dome and chimney. The exhaust from the engine which had previously been directed beneath the frames was re-routed to be shot from this new chimney to give the appearance that the engine was "steaming" along. The locomotive never carried a name but had the heraldic crests of the country estate on the side panels. By 1980 the park was losing money and closed, the locomotive, her sister, carriages and all trackwork were put up for sale.
