A weir/ˈwɪər/ is a barrier across a river designed to alter its flow characteristics. In most cases, weirs take the form of obstructions smaller than most conventional dams, pooling water behind them while also allowing it to flow steadily over their tops. Weirs are commonly used to alter the flow of rivers to prevent flooding, measure discharge, and help render rivers navigable. Weirs are also used in the study of returning salmonids.
Function
Weirs allow hydrologists and engineers a simple method of measuring the volumetric flow rate in small to medium-sized streams or in industrial discharge locations. Since the geometry of the top of the weir is known and all water flows over the weir, the depth of water behind the weir can be converted to a rate of flow. The calculation relies on the fact that fluid will pass through the critical depth of the flow regime in the vicinity of the crest of the weir. If water is not carried away from the weir, it can make flow measurement complicated or even impossible.
Weir is an outlying area of Bacup(where population details are included) in the Rossendale borough of Lancashire, England and is adjacent to the more historically significant Broadclough. Anciently, Weir constituted a hamlet, but underwent urbanisation and, later, suburbanisation to emerge as a residential suburb of Bacup town after the Burnley Road turnpike was built through the settlement in the 18th Century. Weir straddles the A671 road and is located by the source of the River Irwell, adjacent to the parish of Cliviger. Burnley Road is an accident blackspot, with many crashes taking place over the years often being caused as drivers continue to travel at speeds they would in open countryside. Weir has 2 Pubs, 1 school and 1 shop.
Weir has a football team named AFC Weir who compete in the burnley and district Sunday league, formed in 2010 their highest finish was fifth in the 2011/2012 season. They play their home games at stacksteads rec
A weir is a small dam built across a river to control the upstream water level. Weirs have been used for ages to control the flow of water in streams, rivers, and other water bodies. Unlike large dams which create reservoirs, the goal of building a weir across a river isn’t to create storage, but only to gain some control over the water level. Over time, the term weir has taken on a more general definition in engineering to apply to any hydraulic control structure that allows water to flow over its top, often called its crest. In fact, the spillways of many large dams use weirs as control structures. So how do they work?
