The Wazirs or Waziris (Pashto:وزير) are a Karlani Pashtun tribe found in Pakistan and on its border with Afghanistan. The tribe comprises two geographically separate subgroups and are found in the Waziristan region that takes its name from them. The Utmanzai are settled in the North Waziristan Agency and the Ahmadzai are in the South Waziristan Agency. Those subgroups are in turn divided further, for example into Utmanzai tribes such as the Bakka Khel and Jani Khel.
The common ancestor of the Ahmadzai and Utmanzai is believed by them to be the eponymous Wazir, who is also ancestor to the Mehsud tribe that has since taken a distinct and divergent path. Through Wazir, the tribes trace their origins to Karlani and thence to the founder of the Pashtun lineage, Qais Abdur Rashid. Some western ethnologists consider them of being mix of Scythian or Tatar ethnicity.
Although the Utmanzai and Mehsud tribes have a traditional rivalry and live in geographically distinct regions, the Ahamdzai and Mehsud communities co-exist peacefully and many head men are connected by marriage.

If the Uzbeks will help us, we will definitely also help them. They know how they can protect themselves and we cannot teach them."
16. Graves of militants
STORYLINE:
Tribal militants praised by the government for an assault on foreign fighters in northwestern Pakistan said on Tuesday that they would not allow "foreign extremists" into Waziristan.
Fierce clashes between armed tribesmen and Central Asian militants last week in Pakistan's South Waziristan tribal region, bordering Afghanistan, reportedly left up to 160
people dead, including about 130 Uzbek and Chechen fighters allegedly linked to al-Qaida.
The government hailed the bloodletting as a sign that local tribes will evict foreign militants without the involvement of Pakistani security forces.
A spokesman for the Pakistani military, which is under pressure from the United States to do more against Taliban and al-Qaida in the remote border zone, even described them as "patriots".
But members of the tribal militia that led last week's assault told reporters that they had not turned against the foreigners for the government's sake.
"Which ever country did wrong with us whether it is America, Russia, China or even Pakistan, the tribal people would be ready to fight against them, even if India did, we will be there," Haji Sharif, an aide to a senior tribal leader in the region, told reporters in Wana, South Waziristan's main town.
Sharif is an aide to Maulvi Nazir, a militant leader formerly aligned with the Taliban militia fighting foreign troops in Afghanistan.
Reporters were shown vehicles that were allegedly taken from Americans across the border in Afghanistan.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of armed tribesmen will help the Pakistani government hunt for al-Qaida and Taliban suspects believed to be hiding near the border with Afghanistan, tribal leaders have announced.
Elders made the announcement following a jirga, or tribal council, attended by thousands of tribesmen on Sunday in Wana, the main town in the tribal South Waziristan region about 300 kilometres (190 miles) west of Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.
Pakistan is a key US ally and has moved some 70-thousand troops to its sprawling tribal regions, in a coordinated effort with US forces in Afghanistan to trap terror suspects believed to move to-and-fro across the rugged frontier.
Authorities are putting growing pressure on tribesmen as the hunt for suspects, including al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden, intensifies.
Many tribesmen in this fiercely autonomous region resent the presence of Pakistani troops.
Many also share cultural and ethnic ties with Afghanistan's former ruling Taliban and have been accused of granting shelter to terrorist fugitives.
Some tribal elders have been detained and one tribe fined for allegedly allowing attacks on Pakistani forces from their lands.
According to the tribal elders, 600 armed men are being organised for raids, though they have not said when they will start operating.
Tribesmen have said they would set up such militia groups in the past but have failed to act.
In the most recent military operation two weeks ago, Pakistani troops arrested about 25 people near Wana, although none of them were reported to be senior al-Qaida or Taliban figures.
Local anger at military operations deepened after an incident on February 28 when 13 people were shot when a minibus failed to stop at a checkpoint near Wana.

Villagers discovered the bullet-riddled bodies of two men on Tuesday in a Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border
where the government is involved in an ongoing conflict with pro-Taliban militants, an official said.
The two men were found with their hands tied behind their backs on a roadside near Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan, an intelligence official said.
They had been shot in the head and torso, the official said on condition of anonymity because he did not have the authority to speak publicly to the media.
The bodies were taken to the municipal office in Miran Shah where they had yet to be claimed, he said.
He said there were no firm clues to the identity of the men or of their killers.
North Waziristan lies in the remote Pakistani tribal belt along the border with Afghanistan where Arab, Central Asian and Afghan militants, some suspected of links to al-Qaida, have found refuge with sympathetic tribesmen.
Scores of tribesmen have been killed in the area in recent years in suspected militant attacks after they were accused of collaboration with Pakistani authorities or being informers for the United States.
Last week, the beheaded body of another man, dumped near a border village in North Waziristan, was found with a note accusing him of being a US Spy.
Pakistan, a key US ally in the war against terrorism has deployed thousands of troops to its border areas along Afghanistan to track down militants.
The government has also vowed to strengthen moderate tribal chiefs and in September struck a controversial peace deal with tribal elders in a bid to halt militant attacks on security forces.
However, there has been a surge in militant-linked violence, including several deadly suicide attacks on police and soldiers, since a January 16 military strike on a suspected al-Qaida base in the tribal zone that killed eight people.

STORYLINE:
Under pressure from Pakistani authorities, hundreds of armed Pakistani tribesmen started a hunt on Tuesday for al-Qaida suspects believed to be hiding in remote territories near the Afghanistan border.
Members of the Utmankhel tribe in South Waziristan started the search a day after the regional governor, Iftikhar Hussain Shah, told elders in the provincial capital, Peshawar, that they have until April 20 to expel foreign militants or face military action.
Officials believe that hundreds of al-Qaida and Taliban fighters are hiding in the South and North Waziristan regions, some harbored by tribe members in villages near Wana, the main town of South Waziristan.
On Tuesday, about 600 Utmankhel tribesmen, many armed with assault rifles, gathered in Azam Warsak, a small town about 15 kilometers (10 miles) west of Wana.
The men traveled to nearby Shin Warsak where they searched houses and questioned people in the area for clues to find the militant suspects.
It was not immediately clear with what level of conviction the search was being undertaken.
US, Afghan and Pakistani authorities all accuse the tribesmen of doing little to move against the foreigners in recent months.
Shin Warsak is in a region where Pakistani troops fought fierce battles last month with militants hiding in fortress-like mud houses, killing at least 63 foreign and local militants.
Nearly 50 Pakistani troops and officials and a dozen civilians also died in the clash.
Government soldiers captured more than 160 suspects, but hundreds managed to escape.
Uzbek militant leader Tahir Yuldash, believed to be among the escaped, was wounded in the action, officials said.
