How do we get clean drinking water?

Health workers at Bondo Health Centre IV in Arua District have reported a decline in cases of waterborne diseases following the introduction of a clean water source that serves both the facility and surrounding communities. The health facility, which previously faced challenges due to a lack of clean water, relied on water fetched from nearby streams, compromising the quality of service delivery, including maternal health care services.

You wake up in the middle of the night with a dry mouth and go to the kitchen to quench your thirst or come from the outside after a tiresome day and take a refreshing shower to unwind.
Regardless of the time, you can access water for any kind of consumption thanks to a seemingly simple but vital system: City water supply. As you know, water goes through a number of processes before it starts to pour down from your sink. But how does city water work?
Water makes up the bigger portion of our planet; however, usable water comes from either surface water or groundwater. Public water systems get the water from these sources to a treatment plant through a process called catchment.
After a series of other processes like coagulation, screening, ozonation, and filtration, the water becomes suitable for human consumption. Then municipal water systems distribute the water to the whole area via pumps, and we enjoy our showers or wash our vegetables thanks to the home water connection.
Seeing the flow of usable water once you open the tap may seem simple due to the regularity of the practice. However, there is a complex system and a lot of working hours behind the process that makes it possible.
If you want to know more about how water systems work, get yourself a glass of water and enjoy watching this video!

While 40 million Californians suffer through unprecedented drought, one billionaire couple owns a massive share of the state's water system, largely seized in a series of secretive meetings two decades ago.
That system was largely paid for by the very taxpayers whose water these billionaires hold hostage. The Resnicks are the biggest farmers in California–as of 2007 they owned four San Francisco’s worth of farmland. Nearly half of Americans buy at least one of their products: pistachios, POM pomegranate juice, mandarins, flowers, and more.
It’s all under one massive umbrella: The Wonderful Company, a privately owned company worth at least 5 billion dollars. The majority owners, the Resnicks, are worth at least 8 billion.
We dug into how Lynda and Stewart Resnick were able to seize control of what should be a shared public resource with @SecondThought on this latest episode of "How They Got Rich" by The Class Room at More Perfect Union.

Water Only for the Rich? The Banks & Funds Profiting from the Water Crisis | Documentary
They call it ’blue gold.’ Around the world, demand for water is exploding. By 2050, we will be living through a water crisis - at least one in four will live in a country suffering from water shortages – creating ideal conditions for a new market…
Goldman Sachs, HSBC, UBS, Allianz, Deutsche Bank, BNP. Banks, investment funds and hedge funds are all rushing to invest billions of euros in anything related to water. A real monopoly of water has begun. From California to Australia, from New York to London via Marseille, we investigate the financialization of water. New power relations are being established and access to water is being threatened.
It’s a battle taking place on many fronts: ideological, political, environmental, and of course, economic. The fate of nearly 10 billion inhabitant...

Twenty-five years ago, the UK’s water sector expertise was widely regarded as world class, and even now its research capability is highly regarded internationally. But the water industry today is frequently described as hopelessly conservative, uninterested in researching technological innovations likely to reduce its consumption of energy and chemicals, and careless of its customers’ consumption of potable water. Allegedly, whilst yielding reliable returns to investors, its ‘know-how’ fails to compete internationally, its activity damages the natural environment, and the implications of climate-related carbon targets are ignored.

The fate of nearly 10 billion inhabitants around the world depends on its outcome.

If this is a fair analysis of the situation of recent years, are any changes in prospect? Drawing on a evidence from a large number of interviews with industry leaders in water businesses, contractors, consultants, regulators, academics, government agencies, professional bodies, water charities, and others, the seminar will consider the extent to which the structure of the sector supports or militates against innovation. It will flag up some game-changing technologies and ideas that could promote radical shifts in resource efficiency, and evaluate the future potential for change.

Honduras: Escaping violence and poverty | DW Documentary
Every year, tens of thousands of people from the central American nation of Honduras leave their home country to try and reach the United States. A dangerous journey that often ends in death. The refugees are escaping poverty, gang violence and natural catastrophes.
Honduras: a nation hit ever more frequently by extreme weather such as tropical hurricanes and flooding. Almost 70 per cent of the population lives in poverty; more than 50 per cent of those are in dire need. Violent incidents, gang warfare and abductions are part of daily life here. The murder rate is one of the highest in the world. Many Hondurans see no other option but to leave. Honduras, the Force to Live | Deadliest Journeys
In Honduras, it is better to arm yourself with courage to explore the semblance of roads that lead to the most remote provinces. However, thousands of Hondurans continue to live in these regions cut off from the world. Their only link with society, these villagers owe it to a handful of people who find the courage to walk these roads in a deplorable state.
Thus, Hugo is one of the few in his region to own a car so, when he can, he improvises a taxi to help the most deprived. Every week, Rosa, a trader, faces impassable roads with her driver to sell her vegetables in the most remote villages.
Juanita and her two little daughters spend their days, despite the rain and the cold, filling in potholes for a few cents.

Every year, tens of thousands of people from the central American nation of Honduras leave their home country to try and reach the United States. A dangerous journey that often ends in death. The refugees are escaping poverty, gang violence and natural catastrophes.

The murder rate is one of the highest in the world. Many Hondurans see no other option but to leave. They are undeterred by the high cost; the risk that they’ll die on the journey or be murdered by human traffickers; or just how unlikely it is that they’ll actually make it to the US at all. Often, it’s the men that leave; their wives and children stay behind and never hear back from their husbands and fathers, even if they’ve managed to enter the US and are living illegally there. The money they promised to send to their families never arrives. As a result, more and more women feel compelled to flee themselves. They might take one of their children along, or leave them all with relatives. The country is losing its life blood - in some regions, villages are populated only by children and elderly people. Aid organizations try to help the most desperate, but even they are powerless to stem the tide of refugees.
