Gang-rape and genital electrocution: How Russia's war crimes in Ukraine could go un-prosecuted
One month into living under Russian occupation in northern Ukraine, Marina cycled cautiously through her village. She was five doors from her elderly parents’ blue garden gate when three soldiers ordered her to stop. Grabbing her hair, they dragged Marina into a neighbour’s empty house.
“They forced me to strip naked,” the 47-year-old said, picking at the skin around her fingernails. “I asked them not to touch me, but they said: ‘Your Ukrainian soldiers are killing us’.”
Marina paused, wiped her tears and tried to steady her shaking hands. “They were shooting their guns inches away from my head so I couldn’t move or run,” she said. “Then they started raping me.”
Weeks after a Ukrainian town is liberated, its civilians are visited by sexual violence prosecutors and asked an indirect ques...

The Rape of German Women during WWII | Lisa Slater | Women’s History Month | USC Shoah Foundation
"Stalin gave his troops the right to rape, to steal, to kill, to do whatever they want to do. And believe me, they did.”
Usually, when we discuss the Holocaust, it’s easy to distinguish between the perpetrators and victims. However, some instances of wartime violence blur these lines, and identifying the perpetrator/victim becomes unclear. Lisa Slater, for example, was a Protestant Christian German woman who served as a teletypist for the German army during World War II. She claims to have been unaware of the persecution of Jews (and the Nazi’s other victims). In her USC Shoah Foundation testimony, Lisa recalls the Soviet soldiers’ violent victimization of her and other German women.

The Allied Rape Wave of 1944 - War Against Humanity 116
Since the earliest days of humanity, where there has been war, there has been rape. This war is no different. As vast armies battle across Europe, the chaos in their wake breeds an epidemic of rape. In its action and its punishment the European rape wave is also highly racialised. It adds up to a storm of suffering.

Women as spoils of war at the end of World War Two | DW Documentary
In early 1945, at least 860,000 women and girls in Germany were sexually abused by Allied soldiers. The victims, and the children they bore after being raped, suffer trauma to this day. Many remained silent throughout their lives and took their stories to their graves.
The German army rampaged through mainland Europe for six years until early 1945, when World War Two was brought to an end on the continent and the Nazi regime was defeated. But there’s a chapter in this story that’s been largely forgotten to this day: Hundreds of thousands of women and girls in Germany were sexually abused by Allied soldiers. Many remained silent out of shame and fear, particularly when the perpetrators were members of western armies.
The documentary hears the stories of some of these victims, talks to th...

Weeks after a Ukrainian town is liberated, its civilians are visited by sexual violence prosecutors and asked an indirect question: “Did the Russians behave?”
The answers have been harrowing; men’s genitals have been electrocuted, women forced to parade naked, and children as young as four orally raped.
The use of rape in war has existed for as long as there has been conflict. It’s used to terrorise and degrade a community, and has been committed in 17 ongoing conflicts around the world. Yet although it is deemed a war crime under international law, it mostly remains undisclosed and hidden under layers of stigma and fear.
Now, Ukraine has become the first country to begin documenting the mounting evidence while its troops battle on.
“We have seen forced nudity, rapes, sexual torture, children forced to watch rapes,” said Iryna Didenko, the lead prosecutor of the new unit, speaking in a heavily-guarded government building lined with sandbags in Kyiv. “Women have been told by Russians: ‘Say hello to your husband for me’ while being raped.”
Cases have been reported in all regions occupied by Russia over the past year; Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Kherson, she said. Officially, 171 victims have agreed to start legal proceedings, though investigators believe the number is “much, much higher”. The victims are aged four to 82, and include 39 men, and 13 children.

Between December 13th, 1937, and the beginning of February 1938, Japanese soldiers entered the Chinese city of Nanjing following a very brief fight for the city. For over six weeks, they committed some of the worst atrocities, first against the Chinese soldiers after they surrendered, then against the civilians. The Westerners who did not flee from the city prior to the Japanese arrival set up a safety zone in the weeks leading up to the Imperial Army entering the city. This was the only place where there was relative safety, and many of the Chinese citizens tried to find refuge there.

"Raping gave us a lot of pleasure. When we rape we feel free", confesses a Congolese National Army soldier. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning". This report was made with the support of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

Since the earliest days of humanity, where there has been war, there has been rape. This war is no different. As vast armies battle across Europe, the chaos in their wake breeds an epidemic of rape. In its action and its punishment the European rape wave is also highly racialised. It adds up to a storm of suffering.

The documentary hears the stories of some of these victims, talks to their children and grandchildren, as well as historians to reveal how the trauma has affected them throughout their lives. The documentary also shows how important it is to confront the taboo head on: After all, sexual violence against women and girls is still very much part of modern warfare.
