Spontaneous Speech: Challenges and Opportunities for Parsing
Recent advances in automatic speech recognition (ASR) provide new opportunities for natural language processing of speech, including applications such as understanding, summarization and translation. Parsing can play an important role here, but much of current parsing technology has been developed on written text. Spontaneous speech differs substantially from text, posing challenges that include the absence of punctuation and the presence of disfluencies and ASR errors. At the same time, prosodic cues in speech can provide disambiguating context beyond that available from punctuation. This talk looks at means of leveraging prosody and uncertainty models to improve parsing (and recognition) of spontaneous speech, and outlines challenges in speech processing that impact parsing.

The first appearance of three founding members of the team was in The Brave and the Bold #54, which featured Kid Flash (Wally West), Robin (Dick Grayson), and Aqualad (Garth), while The Brave and the Bold #60 marked the official debut of the team using the group name Teen Titans, now including the fourth founding member, Wonder Girl (Donna Troy). Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States.[2] The small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963.[5] Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of aboriginal people from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Native activism across the nation with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
Today, the island's facilities are managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; it is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. Hornblower Cruises and Events, operating under the name Alcatraz Cruises, is the official ferry provider to and from the island.
It is home to the abandoned prison, the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony (mostly western gulls, cormorants, and egrets). According to a 1971 documentary on the History of Alcatraz, the island measures 1,675 feet (511 m) by 590 feet (180 m) and is 135 feet (41 m) at highest point during mean tide.[6] However, the total area of the island is reported to be 22 acres (8.9 ha).[2]
Landmarks on the island include the Main Cellhouse, Dining Hall, Library, Lighthouse, the ruins of the Warden's House and Officers Club, Parade Grounds, Building 64, Water Tower, New Industries Building, Model Industries Building, and the Recreation Yard.

The Teen Titans, also known as the New Teen Titans and the Titans, are a fictional superhero team appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, often in an eponymous monthly series. As the group's name suggests, its members are teenage superheroes, and a core theme of the series is of teenagers learning to take on adult roles and responsibilities.
Bob Haney, the creator and long-time writer of the Teen Titans series, considers the earlier issue to be the "first appearance" of the Teen Titans.[1]
The first Teen Titans series ran 43 bi-monthly issues, ending in early 1973. The group appeared sporadically in reprints via The Brave and the Bold and DC Super-Stars over the next three years, which revived interest in the group. New stories began when the team's title was renewed in late 1976, continuing its original numbering. Ten issues later, the title was cancelled again during what become known as The DC Implosion. The four founding members were joined by Green Arrow's sidekick, Speedy (Roy Harper), Aquagirl, Bumblebee, the first Hawk and Dove, and three heroes who did not wear costumes: Mal Duncan, Lilith, and Gnarrk.
After only modest initial success, the series became a hit in a 1980s revival[2][3] under writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, in which the team was relaunched as The New Teen Titans, aging the characters to young adulthood. Original members Robin, Wonder Girl and Kid Flash were joined by new characters Cyborg, Starfire and Raven, as well as the former Doom Patrol member Beast Boy, as Changeling. The group had several encounters with the original Titans of Greek mythology, particularly Hyperion. The series was re-titled Tales of the Teen Titans with issue #41 (April 1984). A second volume was launched in August 1984, by which time Robin had assumed the identity Nightwing and Kid Flash had been replaced by Jericho. Pérez left in 1985 to headline the DC Comics 50th Anniversary limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths. Tales of the Teen Titans was canceled in July 1988 after #91. The New Teen Titans Volume 2 was retitled The New Titans in December 1988 (issue #50) and was ultimately canceled in February 1996 after 130 issues.
The series was relaunched as Teen Titans in October 1996, with all-new members under Atom (Ray Palmer), who had been de-aged to a teenager. This series ended in September 1998 after 24 issues. A three-issue limited series titled JLA/The Titans: The Technis Imperative (December 1998 – February 1999) led to the March 1999 debut of The Titans, a series featuring select Titans from across the group's incarnations that produced 50 issues until April 2003. A new regular series titled Teen Titans began in September 2003, featuring Cyborg, Starfire, Beast Boy and Raven of the 1980s group joined by new teenaged versions of Robin (Tim Drake), Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark) and Kid Flash (Bart Allen), as well as the Superman clone Superboy (Kon-El). By 2006, the team included only the younger members and some new additions. A concurrent series titled Titans debuted in April 2008 featuring some of the original and 1980s members, such as Nightwing, Troia, Flash (Wally West), Tempest, Arsenal, Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy and Raven.
In September 2011, the franchise rebooted again as part of DC's The New 52 event with a new team consisting of Red Robin (Tim Drake), Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark), Kid Flash (Bart Allen), Solstice, Superboy and two new members, Bunker (Miguel Jose Barragan) and Skitter (Celine Patterson). This was originally depicted as the first incarnation of the Titans, until the 2016 Titans Hunt and DC Rebirth storylines re-established the group's original founding members and history.
A Teen Titans animated television series ran on Cartoon Network in the mid-2000s based on the 1980s team, but differed from the original. The series spawned two comic book titles, Teen Titans Go! and Titans[disambiguation needed]. The series returned as a series of mini-shorts on the DC Nation block on Cartoon Network. There was also a spinoff of the series named Teen Titans Go! based on the comics.

Wharfies is a fifty-two minute chronological film history of the Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia from its formation in 1902 in the primitive days of hard, physical, exploited labour, to the mechanised, computerised present. It shows how the conditions enjoyed by wharfies of today are the result of eight decades of history, a colourful often turbulent history of human suffering, struggle, and conflict.
The film develops the Federation's history in the context of Australian political and social history. Wherever possible archival footage has been used, going back to the trenches of WWI, and the General Strike of 1917. Later footage is drawn from documentaries made in the 1950s by the WWF Film Unit. Dramatic reconstruction of events using professional actors is also used.
Oral history is utilised as veteran wharfies, with memories back to the 1920s, appear in the film, recalling experiences of waterside work, life, and the politics of the WWF, recollections still tinged with anger and bitterness, but a history recalled with passion, humour, dignity, and pride.
Produced and Directed by Elisabeth Knight for the WWF and written by Elisabeth Knight and Keith Gow, an original member of the WWF Film Unit, the film is a credit to its creators, and to the wharfies whose history it records.

The Justice League is a team of fictional superheroes appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The team was conceived by writer Gardner Fox during the Silver Age of Comic Books as a reimagining of the Golden Age's Justice Society of America. Originally consisting of Superman (Clark Kent), Batman (Bruce Wayne), Wonder Woman (Diana Prince), The Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman (Arthur Curry) and Martian Manhunter (J'onn J'onzz), they first appeared together as the Justice League of America (JLA) in The Brave and the Bold #28 (March 1960).[1]
The Justice League's roster has rotated throughout the years, consisting of various superheroes from the DC Universe, such as The Atom (Ray Palmer), Big Barda (Barda Free), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance), Black Lightning (Jefferson Pierce), Captain Marvel/Shazam (Billy Batson), Cyborg (Victor Stone), Elongated Man (Ralph Dibny), The Flash (Wally West), Green Arrow (Oliver Queen), Green Lantern (John Stewart), Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders), Hawkman (Carter Hall), Metamorpho (Rex Mason), Orion, Plastic Man (Eel O'Brian), Power Girl (Kara Zor-L), Red Tornado, Stargirl (Courtney Whitmore), and Zatanna. In The New 52 reboot, Cyborg replaced the Martian Manhunter as one of the seven founding members.
The team received its own comic book title called Justice League of America in November 1960. With The New 52 in 2011, DC Comics released a second volume of Justice League. In July 2016, the DC Rebirth initiative again relaunched the Justice League comic book titles with the third volume of Justice League. Since its inception, the team has been featured in various films, television programs, and video games.

Many Westerners are unfamiliar with the history and importance of the diaspora or the disambiguation of African Slaves to the Americans. Some went state side where they were saddled with slavery and abusive treatment. Another cross-section wound up in Cuba and the surrounding Caribbean islands. They created an enclave of traditional dance rhythms based off of the Cleve and what would be dubbed Afro-Cuban Rhythms.
My guest today is a product of the Bahamas where he was a professional jockey and drummer during his teenage years. He came to the united states and tried his hand in acting including the James Bond classic Thunderball. It was during this time that he met Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and his musical career took off. He became the in demand studio percussionist for Berry Gordy and Motown, you will also find him playing with Billy Preston, Charles Kynard, Dennis Coffey, the aforementioned mentioned Cannonball, Seals and Crofts and Neil Diamond. He was able to take the conga drum and fit into gypsy folk, rock, symphonic soul, disco and jazz. Even today I am digging through a record bin and I pull out a Bellamy Brothers record and I there's My man King Errisson on percussion. Welcome to the JFS.....
