"Waiting at the Church" is a popular British music hall song written by Fred Leigh (words) and Henry Pether (music) for Vesta Victoria. It is sung by a bride-to-be who has given her fiancé, Obadiah Binks, all her money to buy a ring or a house only to be left "waiting at the church", and finds out the truth when Obadiah sends her a note telling her he is already married. It has featured in a number of films since the earliest days of cinema. The silent film Waiting at the Church featured a performance by Victoria as she acted out the lyrics. Several other silent films were made to accompany recordings of the song. Sound films which use the song include Here Come the Huggetts, Millions Like Us and I Thank You. Richard Thompson included it on his album 1000 Years of Popular Music. It has also been covered many times, including by Julie Andrews and Miss Piggy.
The song is notable in British politics for being sung by the then Prime Minister, James Callaghan, at the Annual Congress of the TUC in the autumn of 1978, to indicate that there would not be a General Election that year. Callaghan misattributed the song to the better-known Marie Lloyd, an error which has in consequence become common.
The action in the film follows the lyrics of the song. Porter made another film to accompany the song for the Novelty Song Film Co. in 1907. That version focuses more on the singer's performance.

Vesta Victoria performs 'Waiting at the Church (My Wife Won't Let Me)' by Fred Leigh and Henry Pether.

According to Rick Altman's book "Silent Film Sound", the visuals variously accompanied a vocal performance or singalong according to the exhibitor. The film contains a pause, curtain call and encore of the chorus, with an extra visual gag coming at the end. The song "Waiting at the Church" was the basis for a comedy narrative film in 1906 (wrongly conflated on some parts of the internet, such as IMDB, with this film), and was ...

The synchronisation here is by Glenn Mitchell from an audio recording of Vesta Victoria performing the same song. The apparent key of the performance matches recordings issued on Clarion #2268 and Edison Bell #6792. Upload from a PAL speed DVD of a VHS recording.
Vesta Victoria performing "Poor John" was filmed on the same background, presumably in the same session. It's on YouTube posted by the Library of Congress, unfortunately without sound.

Youth worshipper, goddess of ruin Youth worshipper, like you know what you're doing I'll bet the sun and rain never touch your face again Race against the time Youth worshipper, hope you know what you're worth now Youth worshipper, Like you're paying the earth now You want the child back, want an aphrodisiac To fill the crack with time Hooves and horns and teeth and bones I'm gonna stitch you up when you come unsewn Youth worshipper, wrapped in blue fox and ermine Youth worshipper, got no pity for vermin Your engines and machines drink your fuel and steal your scenes They come between in time (Chorus)(Repeat first verse)
