The Voortrekkers (Afrikaans and Dutch for pioneers, literally "fore-pullers", "those in front who pull", "fore-trekkers") were Afrikaner emigrants during the 1830s and 1840s who left the Cape Colony (British at the time, but founded by the Dutch) moving into the interior of what is now South Africa in what is known as the Great Trek. The Great Trek consisted of a number of mass movements under a number of different leaders.
Voortrekker Leaders arranged in order by size of party {number of families in brackets}:-
Hendrik Potgieter (19 DEC 1792- 16 DEC 1852), (his party included that of Sarel Cilliers), {158},
This is the first episode in a new series of stories told by Battlefield Guide, Ron Gold, based at Three Tree Hill. This series will focus on the Voortrekker people and the challenges they faced during The Great Trek, which began in 1836. It was a mass migration of Dutch-speaking inhabitants of the British-run Cape Colony, who left the Cape and travelled eastward by wagon-train, into the interior of the continent. They did this in order to live beyond the reach of the British colonial administration.

How did the Zulus Interact with the Voortrekkers? | The Zulu-Boer War (1835-1839)
The Boers were the descendants of Dutch settlers in the Cape of South Africa who during the Great Trek "trekked" inland and founded several Boer Republics. The Zulus were a kingdom that rose to prominence in the early 19th Century under the direction of Shaka Zulu and soon became the greatest military power in Southeast Africa. In this video I'll be looking at the relationship between the Boer Voortrekkers moving eastwards into the interior of the African continent and the Zulu they met standing in their way.

What should South Africa do with its monuments to apartheid?
Some people’s pain is another people’s heritage.
In South Africa, monuments to apartheid and colonialism represent oppression, enslavement and stolen land to some — and pioneering founders to others.
We look at the Voortrekker Monument, Freedom Park, and the statue of British colonialist Cecil John Rhodes.
Whether in South Africa, or the United States, racism is its own monument to an awful past, and an all too common reality for so many people of color, whether overtly or structurally.
Freedom of speech is an essential right, but when the people who were oppressed under systems like apartheid and Jim Crow have yet to fully enjoy the freedom of all their rights, flying a flag that represents historical systems of oppression could be seen as an affront to everyone’s freedom.
