Aromatic Fire-cured smoking tobacco is a robust variety of tobacco used as a condimental for pipe blends. It is cured by smoking over gentle fires. In the United States, it is grown in northern middle Tennessee, western Kentucky and in Virginia. Fire-cured tobacco grown in Kentucky and Tennessee is used in some chewing tobaccos, moist snuff, some cigarettes and as a condiment leaf in pipe tobacco blends. It has a rich, slightly floral taste, and adds body and aroma to the blend.
Latakia
Another fire-cured tobacco is Latakia and is produced from oriental varieties of N. tabacum. The leaves are cured and smoked over smoldering fires of local hardwoods and aromatic shrubs in Cyprus and Syria. Latakia has a pronounced flavor and a very distinctive smoky aroma, and is used in Balkan and English-style pipe tobacco blends.
Brightleaf tobacco
Brightleaf tobacco is commonly known as "Virginia tobacco", regardless of where in the world it is harvested. Prior to the American Civil War, most tobacco grown in the US was fire-cured dark-leaf. This type of tobacco was planted in fertile lowlands, used a robust variety of leaf, and was either fire cured or air cured.
Virginia (i/vərˈdʒɪnjə/vər-JIN-yə, UK/vərˈdʒɪniə/vər-JIN-ee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" due to its status as the first colonial possession established in mainland British America, and "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there, more than any other state. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city, and Fairfax County is the most populous political subdivision. The Commonwealth's estimated population as of 2014 is over 8.3 million.
The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New WorldEnglish colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties seceded to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under one-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.
The reason for Virginia's name is not known; it may be named after Verginia, the Roman noblewoman slain by her father, but it may alternatively have been named after the American state of Virginia, which is contiguous with Washington.
Photometric observations of this asteroid at the Organ Mesa Observatory in Las Cruces, New Mexico during 2008 gave a light curve with a period of 14.315 ± 0.001 hours and a brightness variation of 0.19 ± 0.02 in magnitude. The shape of the light curve at the maximum was found to change with phase angle.
The orbit of 50 Virginia places it in an 11:4 mean motion resonance with the planet Jupiter. The computed Lyapunov time for this asteroid is only 10,000 years, indicating that it occupies a chaotic orbit that will change randomly over time because of gravitational perturbations of the planets.
Tobacco seeds were brought to Virginia around 400 years ago and formed a variety of the Nicotiana Tabacum tobacco plant. Due to the soil the leaves grew thinner and had a lighter taste than the “Spanish tobacco” growing in the Caribbean area. It became an instant hit among pipe smokers and production constantly increased. Today Virginia tobacco is a component of pipe tobacco, cigarettes and Roll Your Own tobacco, which qualifies Virginia tobacco to be the most smoked tobacco in the world.

Tobacco Selections: Bright and Red Virginia
A lot of people ask about the different grades of leaf we use to create our pipe tobacco blends. Truth is, there aren't that many of them. In the case of Virginias, for example, we use only one bright grade and three red grades in nearly all our blends. Tune in as Jeremy Reeves talks a little more about these grades, explains the differences between them, and offers an inside look into our selection process.

Curing my Home Grown Virginia Tobacco
How to grow tobacco series. Color curing my Viginia Tobacco plant leaf, using the towel method. Smooth to smoke as is, but will improve even more with a year of age on it.
This method has leaf ready to smoke in about three weeks from harvest.
Harvest the bottom leaves first, the plant will keep growing at the top.

Gallaher's Deluxe Mixture Pipe Tobacco (1940)
Friends,
Today, the Irish in me wanted to take a trip back in time to 1940 and experience a ripe old can of Gallaher's Deluxe Mixture, made by Gallaher Limited!
This was an old school light latakia blend made in Ireland. I haven't been able to come up with an official component list but aside from the Latakia, it appears to have Virginia leaf along with some Burley or perhaps Cavendish. After 84 years of hibernation, the flavors have blended together beautifully. Sweet, smokey, and complex! Man, the aroma and taste is outstanding.
Deluxe Mixture is another classic of yesteryear that I still wish was around today!
Have a great day, take it easy, and enjoy!
